Job Description

Some careers offer more opportunities than others.

If you’re looking for further opportunities to develop your career, take the next step in fulfilling your potential right here at HSBC.

Hong Kong Technology comprises 3,000+ employees globally, primarily based in the hub locations of Hong Kong, our Strategic Development Centres in Guangzhou and Xi’an (China). Tech professionals work in partnership with the business who rely on us for delivering innovative, robust, stable platforms to enable their investment, and financial solutions for clients.

We are looking for an exceptional Principal Engineer to serve as the technical anchor for the Hong Kong Technology, covering platforms and capabilities.

The Principal Engineer is a highly technical, hands-on engineering leader who leads by example and drives the implementation of effective technical solutions that maximise customer value. The role acts as a technical consultant and strategist, influencing engineering decisions, processes, architectures, standards and tools. You’ll also lead the systematic application of engineering approaches across the full software lifecycle (build, run, change and retire), with strong Agile, continuous delivery and DevSecOps practices—delivering small, low-risk, high-cadence change and regular production releases.

This role is a key leader for the HK Technology, driving outcomes across core banking transformation, card platform modernisation, and digital platform transformation, with a strong focus on enabling growth in the Non-Resident Chinese (NRC) segment.

In this role, you will:

Define and evolve the reference engineering standards for core platforms, ensuring alignment to the Hong Kong Future State Architecture.

  • Lead end-to-end delivery across the software development lifecycle, coding, technical testing, release and production support.
  • Lead peer reviews and ensure platform consistency, reusability, and compliance with enterprise standards.
  • Champion DevSecOps, CI/CD, and infrastructure-as-code across engineering teams.
  • Drive the control transition to using agentic AI coding assistants.
  • Lead the creation, continual refinement and active enforcement of development standards so technology becomes a sustainable competitive advantage.
  • Mentor senior engineers and influence technical delivery across multiple squads and geographies.
  • Collaborate with Architecture, Cybersecurity, and business product owners to align engineering outcomes to strategic objectives.
  • Represent the engineering excellence domain in cross-platform technology councils and architecture forums.

What you will need to succeed in the role:

  • A strong engineering background and the ability to operate strategically whilst also drilling down into the detail with the engineering teams.
  • Proven track record designing and delivering enterprise-scale transformation and simplification.
  • Experience with streaming and near-real-time patterns where Risk/Finance use cases require timeliness.
  • Practical experience with distributed processing frameworks and workflow orchestration
  • Evidence of engineering community contribution (internal or external) is a plus
  • A good understanding of Financial Services with knowledge of the Finance and Financial Risk domains
  • Ability to follow the industry shifts and offerings across the full-stack including Containers, Kubernetes, Cloud, microservices, data lakes, storage and networking in Cloud environments.
  • Ability to provide technical and conceptual thought leadership, successfully navigate areas of ambiguity and stakeholder disagreement to achieve required outcomes.
  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills across all communities, with experience of successfully influencing senior stakeholders, negotiating effectively, and winning over audiences with compelling and persuasive presentations.
