Job Description

The Principal Engineer – Power Converter - is a key Controlled Title Holder role in the Electrical Subsystem organization in GE Renewable Energy Onshore Wind. This role will have functional responsibility for power converter hardware and controls for new turbine design and fleet support.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Provide guidance, recommendations, and requirements to the power converter engineering team to ensure robust system design.
  • Analyze converter grid interactions and impact on performance standards.
  • Develop optimal verification and validation plans considering risk level and lab/resource availability.
  • Set vision for future rotating lab capability and grid simulator controls.
  • Own development and maintenance of the power converter Design Practice (DP) and related component DP’s.
  • Function as a team member/reviewer in converter related product safety reviews and RCA investigations.
  • Create technology roadmap to shape future product development.
  • Partner with installation and services teams to develop products and solutions aimed to reduce installation complexity and minimize turbine visits.
  • Chair design reviews with responsibility for evaluation of power converter hardware, controls, grid simulations, and validation.
  • Mentor junior engineers to develop pipeline of engineers with expertise in power conversion, grid compliance, and system level control and protection.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an accredited college or university.
  • 10+ years of relevant industry work experience in power conversion and grid interconnection used in LV to MV levels greater than 1MW power base.

  • Ability to travel up to 10% of the time.

Desired Qualifications

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to simplify complex issues for broader internal and external stakeholders.
  • Proven track record of understanding power conversion hardware/controls design and grid integration of related systems.
  • Self-starter with ability to motivate and provide positive and candid reinforcement to team.
  • Experience leading RCAs (i.e. 8D process).
  • Experience applying Lean principles to solving technical challenges.
  • Knowledge of wind turbines, systems and/or components including grid integration.
  • Ability to develop strategic vision and follow through.
  • Demonstrated clear thinker with ability to navigate complex and high-pressure situations.

For candidates applying to a U.S. based position, the pay range for this position is between $131,700.00 and $219,300.00. The Company pays a geographic differential of 110%, 120% or 130% of salary in certain areas.
