Principal Engineer – Mechanical Systems
As a Principal Engineer – Mechanical Systems, you will provide technical leadership of technology programs in development and research of mechanical systems in Gas turbines, Steam turbines, Wind turbines and other products of GE Vernova. You will interact with technologists and engineers to lead technology programs, develop and deliver novel solutions for complex, multi-disciplinary problems.

As a Principal Engineer – Mechanical Systems, you will own, guide and shape technology programs in development and research of mechanical systems in Gas turbines, Steam turbines, Wind turbines and other products of GE Vernova. You will interact with technologists and engineers to lead technology programs, develop and deliver novel solutions for complex, multi-disciplinary problems.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Apply your knowledge in Mechanical Engineering to develop innovative mechanical solutions for GE Vernova products, especially gas turbines, steam turbines and wind turbine systems
  • Provide technical leadership to the team on multi-generation technology programs to enable future design advancements, while independently executing tasks leveraging your technical skills.
  • Drive new solutions based on business goals and long term technology strategies.
  • Do Hands-on Advanced Finite Element Contact Analysis of Components and Systems, including all preprocessing (including meshing tasks, setting of finite element models for all load conditions), running and postprocessing tasks, interpreting the results of the analysis and provide meaningful insights to the global teams and documenting thoroughly the project work
  • Technical program leadership and project management to deliver and deploy technology solutions to address challenging needs of the business
  • Do Advanced modeling and simulation, including high-fidelity analyses in the broad domain of mechanical engineering design of wind turbine blades
  • Develop ideas and concepts to improve performance, operability and availability of wind turbines, gas turbines and steam turbines
  • Lead the most challenging and top field issues, quality issues impacting the businesses
  • Combines physical and digital techniques to drastically improve delivery (speed, cost, scope or efficiency) of their solutions, with relevant AI/ML technologies.
  • Develop and implement hardware for testing and validation, where applicable
    • Network and collaborate with both GE Vernova product engineers and with GE Vernova Advanced Research team members to build plans and execute on technical projects
    • Deliver on technical projects with set timelines and cost, implement plans, and assure proper documentation of the same
    • Relentlessly drive innovation, connecting ideas across multiple technology domains. Influence research directions based on unmet industry needs. Lead Session-T discussions. Publish White Papers and Position Papers as needed. Own significant technologies of the overall aerodynamics roadmap and ensure rapid development/maturation across TRLs and eventual deployment in GE Vernova Products. Influence and convince decision-makers to consider and adopt ideas emanating from the team.
    • Provide leadership, technology guidance and mentor others throughout their domain to maximize team impact. Guide technical strategy and decision-making at the Vernova Advanced Research Organization level and be accountable for the outcomes. Share knowledge with the broader team. Work horizontally to efficiently resolve problems. Participate in defining skills and competencies required for team members in the overall Mechanical domain.

Required Qualifications

  • Doctorate in Aerospace/Mechanical/Structural Engineering or related field with at least 15 years of post-doctoral experience, or Master’s degree in Aerospace/Mechanical/Structural/Applied Mechanics with at least 20 years of research industry experience.
  • Fundamental knowledge of wind turbine blade design and manufacturing
  • Solid Product Knowledge of Gas Turbine, Steam Turbine and Wind Turbine.
  • Deep understanding of Engineering Processes (Design Practices, Testing needs, etc.) for NPI and NTI
  • Experience in using commercial Finite Element Analysis software (ANSYS- Mechanical, ABAQUS)
  • Fundamental knowledge and deep expertise in solid mechanics, composite mechanics, structural dynamics, fatigue, fracture mechanics, with a strong first-principles based understanding of computational methods
  • Solid understanding of numerical methods and techniques commonly used wind turbine blade analysis
  • Hands-on Experience in advanced material modelling of polymer and epoxy materials.
    • Experience in detailed modeling of turbomachinery/wind turbine systems, components, and sub-components
    • Hands-on experience in designing wind turbine blades for various conditions
    • Demonstrated ability to quickly learn new, unfamiliar technology areas and to abstract system level concepts
    • Demonstrated ability to do Systems Thinking
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills
    • Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as in a team environment
    • Conversant with trends in aerodynamics in Industry and Academia.
    • Be aware of current and emerging trends in digital technologies. Proactively combine physical and digital techniques to drastically improve delivery (speed, cost, scope or efficiency) of their solutions
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as in a team environment as “ONE TEAM”
  • Demonstrated initiative, accountability and ownership of assigned tasks.
  • Curiosity and appreciation for role of inter-disciplinary technologies in the product development and the overall “Big Picture”
  • Strong understanding of Materials and their Properties that influence the mechanical design.
  • Understanding of Energy Transition Space and technologies/solutions to navigate the transition
  • Solid understanding of Technology Readiness Levels and Technical Competitive Assessment
  • Passion towards Innovation, Emerging Technologies, IP Landscape, White Space identification and Patents
  • Curiosity to learn and apply AI/ML concepts in engineering design and analysis

  • Exposure to prototype tests, experience with data mining/processing and building models
  • Experience in performing design trade-off studies and design optimization
