Principal Mechanical Design Engineer

Portage, MI

Join Stryker’s Orthopaedic Instruments team and help advance the design and development of complex mechanical and electromechanical products used in surgical procedures. This role offers the opportunity to lead technical efforts across the product lifecycle, from research and concept development through testing, design verification, commercialization, and manufacturing scale-up. You will serve as a technical leader, collaborating across engineering and business functions while contributing to innovative product development initiatives.

What You Will Do

• Lead the research, design, development, modification, and evaluation of complex mechanical and electromechanical assemblies and subsystems.
• Translate customer, clinical, and business requirements into design specifications and independently develop system-level engineering solutions.
• Design and execute advanced prototyping, testing, and verification activities to evaluate product performance and design compliance.
• Analyze and resolve complex product design challenges using engineering principles, root-cause analysis, and data-driven decision-making.
• Lead technical contributions throughout product development programs, including concept generation, design reviews, release activities, and commercialization.
• Develop and maintain engineering documentation, including design records, specifications, risk analyses, test protocols, and technical reports.
• Partner with Quality, Manufacturing, Regulatory Affairs, Clinical, Marketing, and Project Management teams to achieve project milestones and development objectives.
• Mentor engineers on engineering principles, applicable standards, design methods, and product development best practices.

What You Will Need

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor degree in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
• Minimum 8 years of engineering experience in product design, development, or a related technical field.
• Experience creating engineering drawings, 3D models, and specifications using CAD design tools.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience developing mechanical or electromechanical assemblies for regulated products.
• Experience applying Design for Manufacturability (DFM) principles to complex product designs.
• Experience applying Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) and engineering analysis tools to optimize designs.
• Knowledge of materials, manufacturing processes, and processing technologies used in product development.
• Experience supporting design verification, product testing, and technical documentation activities.

$118,000 - $196,700 USD Annual

Travel Percentage: 20%
