Job Description

As the Principal Engineer – Farm Level Controls, you are responsible for the overall technical underwriting and design acceptance of the farm-level control layer above turbine controls, including cloud-, edge-, and farm-based wind turbine controls, their interfaces, and the overarching control philosophy. You will support defining rigor for acceptance of the design decisions for all cloud, edge and farm control layers above turbine controls that will result in safe, high-quality products and services that meet customer needs.
In this role, you will provide technical leadership across the full lifecycle of Farm Level Controls, from concept development and design execution through product launch and ongoing fleet operations. You will work with Senior Principal Engineers, Chief Engineers, design teams, and cross-functional partners to establish and execute the technical strategy, design rigor, and engineering practices required to deliver safe, high-quality products and services that meet customer needs.
You will play a key role in strengthening technical rigor for design decisions, issue resolution, and the evolution of methods, tools, and technologies within the Farm Level Controls domain. This role also requires building technical depth across the organization through mentoring and development of engineering talent, with particular focus on productizing EDGE controls and maturing capability in that team.
This is a technical leadership role that requires strong engineering judgment, systems thinking, and the ability to lead through influence across teams and functions while driving high standards of safety, quality, and execution.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Provide technical leadership for Farm Level Controls across all stages of the product lifecycle, from concept development and design execution through product launch and ongoing fleet operations.
  • Be accountable for the overall technical underwriting and design acceptance of Farm Level Controls designs, including cloud-, edge-, and farm-based controls and their interfaces.
  • Drive technical rigor in the acceptance of design decisions, DFMEA, root cause analysis, and the methods and tools used within the Farm Level Controls domain.
  • Identify and drive continuous improvement in engineering design processes, design practices, and technical execution for cloud-, edge-, and farm-level controls in partnership with design teams, CTHs, and cross-functional teams.
  • Lead and, where needed, directly support optimization of cloud-, edge-, and farm-level controls designs to ensure compliance with industry standards, safety requirements, and customer needs.
  • Provide technical leadership and expertise to internal and external stakeholders, including customers, suppliers, and regulatory authorities, as needed.
  • Stay current in relevant industry regulations, standards, and intellectual property activity, and participate in standards and industry forums where appropriate to help influence outcomes relevant to Farm Level Controls.
  • Perform risk assessments and support teams in developing mitigation strategies to address technical challenges and ensure safe, high-quality products and services.
  • Partner with Senior Principal Engineers, the Chief Engineer of the Controls CTH Pyramid, and Functional Managers to identify technology needs and support development priorities within the Farm Level Controls domain.
  • Build technical depth in Farm Level Controls by fostering collaboration, knowledge sharing, and professional growth through coaching and mentoring of the engineering team.
  • Work with people leaders to mentor and develop technical talent, with a strong focus on strengthening capability in EDGE controls.

Qualification / Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited university or college in Computer Science, Controls Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a comparable discipline.
  • Major experience in Wind Turbine Controls, SCADA, Cloud, or EDGE application development.
  • Prior technical leadership experience guiding teams through the design process to deliver safe, high-quality products.

Desired Characteristics

  • Strong technical expertise in Wind Turbine Controls, SCADA, Cloud, or EDGE application development, with demonstrated ability to drive engineering outcomes related to safety, quality, and fulfillment of customer needs.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead multidisciplinary engineering teams, including remote teams, through design assessments and root cause investigations.
  • Experience resolving complex technical issues by coordinating cross-functional teams and applying analytical problem-solving methods such as FMEA, reliability engineering, and RCA / 8D.
  • Knowledge of wind turbine industry standards and regulations as they apply to cloud-, edge-, and farm-level controls.
  • Experience translating high-level objectives into clear, executable plans and driving disciplined operational execution to achieve intended outcomes.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly across all levels of the organization and gain alignment with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated curiosity and passion for identifying and turning new ideas, technologies, and methodologies into differentiated product outcomes.
