Principal Electrical Engineer|Primary Systems-266280

Help us shape the nation.

UGL Utilities team designs, constructs and maintains critical infrastructure across the power, water and renewable sectors. Ranging from HV Substations and Transmission Lines up to 500kV to power stations and wastewater treatment plants. We design and construct the following assets; substations, transmission lines, power generation, electrical distribution networks, water and waste water treatment plants and water pipelines.

About the role

Flexibility for this role to be based in Sydney, Brisbane or Melbourne.

With major projects in tender, UGL is set to expand our team. There is an opportunity for you to focus on the technical or move into people management if that’s where you passion lies. Supervise and take technical control of and responsibility for groups of professional engineers engaged in complex engineering applications. Plan, direct, co-ordinate other professional and technical staff. Act as the principal technical reference authority and provide technical leadership for all engineering act. Develop a true understanding of the commercial elements of the project and maintain cost efficiency through the entire cost of the design (eg. design, procurement, installation, operation and maintenance)

Provide conceptual and detailed design of HV Substations, Transmission Line, BESS, solar and wind farms.Develop specifications and interface with management on design issues.

Key responsibilities

  • Providing feedback / input to Head of Engineering with regards resource levels and performance etc.

  • Lead a team of engineers that deliver the works under their area of expertise.

  • Assists Head of Engineering in determining budgets and schedule.

  • Monitors budgets and schedule for the areas under their control.

Key areas of substation design:

  • Substation Configuration and Busbar Config (Single, double, 1.5CB scheme, etc

  • Plant layouts, sections, and details

  • Busbars and Connections (Fittings, Busbar Selection (Rigid, Strung), S/C Forces, Gantry forces, Sags/ Tension/ Deflection, Arrangement)

  • Clearances and Layouts (Safety, Fire, Transportation and Maintenance)

  • Underground Services (Trenches/ Conduits/Cable routes capacity)

  • Earthing design (Fundamentals, Soil/ Grid Testing, Current Splits)

  • Solid understanding of HV equipment/Buildings specification and technical particulars.

  • BESS, Solar and Wind farms and their requirements

  • HV cable design

  • Lightning protection

  • EMF and Corona study

  • Insulation Coordination (SA Selection / Insulation Selection)

  • Lighting design

  • Fair Knowledge on system planning, fault calculation, Power quality and Harmonics

Key areas of Electrical design of Transmission Lines:

  • Transposition / Impedance calculation

  • Insulators, Conductors and Fittings

  • Electrical Clearances

  • Earthing design

  • Lightning and Switching Performance / SA Selection / Insulator Selection

  • Noise Study

  • EMF and Corona Study

  • Low frequency Induction (LFI) Study

About You

  • Minimum experience: 15 years

  • 4 year degree qualification to Bachelor status in electrical engineering.

  • CPeng Status

  • Fundamental understanding of primary design.

  • At least 8 year’s design experience in primary design of HV plants.

  • Details understanding of HV cable design, Earthing design and lightning protection.

  • Solid knowledge on insulation coordination, EMF and lighting design

  • Professional level knowledge of Cymcap and CDEGS (MALZ/MALT/SESshield) design software

  • Fair knowledge of EMTP, CDEGS (FCDIST, RESAP, HIFREQ, SPLITS), PVsyst.

  • Sound knowledge of HV and Solar farm equipment specification and ability to investigate the requirements and develop specification from basic information.

  • Basic understanding of secondary design aspects of HV plants, solar and wind farms.

  • Solid understanding of the interface requirements of the civil/structural aspects of HV substations.

  • Site experience during construction/commissioning of HV substations is an advantage

  • Effectively communicate with CAD draughtspersons to optimise drawing output.
