What you will do:Position Summary:

Trane Technologies is seeking a visionary Principal Electrical Engineer Lead for Distributed Energy Resources (DER) and Microgrids to join our dynamic team. Moving beyond traditional electrical design, you will serve as our principal technical authority, driving our renewable energy strategy and developing advanced energy storage and microgrid solutions. In this highly strategic role, you will guide the strategy, development, and execution of complex DER projects to help commercial, institutional, and industrial clients achieve aggressive decarbonization, energy resilience, and sustainability goals.

Strategy and Innovation

  • Influence Trane’s distributed energy, electrification, resilience, and decarbonization strategy through technical expertise, customer insight, and market knowledge.
  • Identify emerging technologies, market trends, and customer needs that create growth opportunities and differentiated solutions.
  • Partner with Engineering Leadership, Innovation, and Regional teams to advance strategic initiatives and define future engineering capabilities, technical standards, and solution offerings.

Technical Strategy & Solution Leadership

  • Develop integrated customer solutions involving electrification, distributed generation, battery energy storage, microgrids, controls, and utility infrastructure.
  • Lead the technical development of complex DER projects for commercial, institutional, and industrial customers.
  • Serve as the primary technical resource for multi-disciplinary projects involving DER, resilience, advanced controls, and grid-interactive systems.
  • Guide key engineering analyses, system integration, code compliance, and utility/interconnection coordination to ensure high-quality, constructible solutions.
  • Support project execution through technical review, cross-functional coordination, and field or commissioning support as needed.

Customer Engagement & Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Interface directly with customers to translate business needs into innovative, actionable, and technically sound solutions.
  • Serve as a technical leader in client presentations, pre-design discussions, and complex project pursuits.
  • Communicate complex technical concepts clearly to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Work closely with Project Development, Sales, Regulatory, Innovation, and Product Management teams to support solution development, proposal strategy, and business growth.
  • Mentor engineers and other team members to strengthen technical capability across the organization.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field.
  • State-issued Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • 7+ years of progressive electrical engineering experience with strong emphasis on Commercial & Industrial (C&I) distributed energy resources, microgrids, solar PV, and battery energy storage systems (BESS).
  • Strong knowledge of electrical engineering principles and design practices related to DER, solar PV, energy storage, and power distribution systems.
  • Experience designing and delivering medium- and high-voltage systems, substations, energy storage integration, and complex power distribution infrastructure.
  • Knowledge of permitting, code compliance, and utility interconnection processes for distributed energy projects.
  • Proficiency with electrical design and modeling tools such as AutoCAD, Revit, PVcase, PVSyst, Helioscope, Energy Toolbase, HOMER, SKM, or ETAP.
  • Proven ability to lead engineering efforts on complex design-build projects and deliver integrated solutions with cross-functional teams.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, technical writing, and communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications & Skills:

  • Advanced degree in Electrical Engineering, Renewable Energy, Power Systems, or related field.
  • Utility-scale renewable energy project experience.
  • Deep expertise in solar PV and energy storage system design, including production modeling, array layout, component selection, and one-line/three-line diagram development.
  • Experience with microgrid controls, advanced distributed energy technologies, or grid-interactive systems.
  • Strong working knowledge of applicable codes and standards, including NEC, NFPA, IEEE, ANSI, UL, and IEC.
  • Experience supporting phased infrastructure upgrades in occupied or operating facilities, with attention to safety, constructability, and quality.
  • Proven success mentoring engineers and leading geographically distributed or multidisciplinary teams.
