About Houston-Galveston Area Council 

The Houston-Galveston Area Council is one of the largest regional planning commissions in the country with a diverse service area of 13 counties and more than 7 million people. We are the pulse of our region addressing issues that cross city limits and county lines every single day.

What will I be doing? 

üData Collection & Integrity: Gather, clean, and validate data from a variety of sources to ensure its accuracy and integrity.

üData Analysis & Insights: Perform detailed statistical analysis to identify trends, patterns, and insights that inform business decisions.

üReporting & Visualization: Develop reports, dashboards, and visualizations using Power BI to present findings to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

üCollaboration: Work with business units to understand data needs and provide analytical support to improve organizational processes.

üSQL & Data Management: Write and maintain SQL queries, scripts, and data pipelines to automate reporting and data extraction tasks.

üPerformance Monitoring: Track key performance indicators and assist in the development of performance dashboards aligned with agency goals.

üData Governance & Documentation: Help define data standards, ensure governance compliance, and document data processes.

üTask Automation: Automate repetitive tasks using tools like Microsoft Power Automate, PowerShell, Python, and other technologies.

üTraining & Support: Provide training and support for staff on analytical tools and automation workflows.

üSystem Integration: Work on integrating automation and analytics workflows with existing systems like Microsoft 365, Asana, and other business applications.

üContinuous Learning: Stay up-to-date on new data analysis methods, automation tools, and industry best practices to continuously improve processes and tools.

Key Qualifications 

üTechnical Expertise: Proficiency in SQL, Excel, and data visualization tools such as Power BI.

üData Analysis: Strong ability to analyze large datasets and extract actionable insights.

üProgramming Skills: Familiarity with statistical programming languages such as Python or R is a plus.

üBusiness Insight: Ability to translate complex business problems into data solutions and communicate findings to a broad audience.

üData Infrastructure: Experience with data warehousing and ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) processes is preferred.

üAutomation Tools: Experience with task automation platforms (e.g., Microsoft Power Automate, PowerShell, or Python) is a plus.

üCollaboration: Ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams, providing data-driven support to meet business needs.

üCommunication Skills: Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present data in an easily digestible format.

üProblem-Solving: Strong analytical thinking with a proactive approach to identifying issues and implementing solutions.

üTeamwork & Independence: Ability to work both collaboratively within a team and independently, ensuring progress and deadlines are met efficiently.

Do you have… 

üBachelor’s degree in an applicable academic discipline or related field of study

ü5 years of experience working with local government, nonprofit programs, school or in job related duties
