Job Description

Principal Chemical Engineer

(Ortloff Engineers COE)

The Principal Chemical Engineer is a senior-level individual contributor who provides technical leadership for the development, improvement, engineering execution, and plant startup of Ortloff cryogenic natural gas processing technologies. The role supports the full value chain from project inception through detailed design, onsite startup, and performance testing with primary responsibility for engineering execution and startup of licensed Ortloff units.

The Principal Chemical Engineer is expected to multiply technical impact across the organization by mentoring engineers, strengthening technical bench depth, creating better systems and work practices, improving reusable design and startup infrastructure, and transferring know-how across projects and regions. The Principal Chemical Engineer will work closely with Technology Specialists, engineering leadership, project teams, engineering contractors, owner/operators, and vendors.

Supported Ortloff Cryogenic Gas Processing Technology Areas: NGL/LPG Recovery, Nitrogen Rejection, Cryogenic Heavy-Hydrocarbon Removal, CO2 Fractionation, and small-scale LNG.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide principal-level technical oversight for the engineering execution, startup, and performance support of licensed Ortloff cryogenic gas processing projects.
  • Provide senior process-engineering guidance during detailed design, including process simulations, heat and material balances, equipment process specifications, process-flow diagrams, piping and instrumentation diagrams, design reviews, and resolution of consequential technical issues.
  • Lead or support startup-readiness reviews, onsite startup, operating-data evaluation, performance troubleshooting, customer communication, and coordination of site and home-office engineering resources.
  • Travel domestically and internationally, including to the Middle East, to provide engineering customer support during detailed design and onsite startup activities. Travel may be up to 20% annually and may require multi-week assignments when project or startup needs require.
  • Mentor and guide lower-level engineers and help develop technical bench strength across the Ortloff technology family by sharing judgment, methods, lessons learned, and practical know-how.
  • Multiply organizational capability by developing and improving reusable design practices, simulation models, engineering tools, review methods, startup checklists, troubleshooting guides, workflows, and other technical infrastructure.
  • Establish clear technical expectations, provide calibrated review, and create opportunities for engineers to become more capable and independent while maintaining accountability for critical project and startup outcomes.
  • Apply principal-level engineering judgment to balance technical integrity, operability, customer commitments, quality, and execution risk.
  • Plan, organize, prioritize, and communicate project technical needs, resource requirements, risks, decisions, and changing priorities to engineering and business leadership.
  • Capture project and startup lessons learned and ensure they are converted into improved technology practices, training, tools, and reusable organizational knowledge.
  • Support technology differentiation, continuous improvement, and customer credibility by connecting design and operating experience to future engineering and product improvements.

YOU MUST HAVE

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in Chemical Engineering.
  • Minimum of 15 years of process and/or process-design engineering experience in the natural gas processing

industry, including at least 5 years of specific experience with NGL/LPG recovery turbo-expander processing

units.

  • Significant experience supporting detailed engineering execution for licensed or complex process projects.
  • Hands-on experience with plant startup, structured troubleshooting, performance support, and unit operation.
  • Ability and willingness to travel up to 20% annually for domestic and international assignments, including travel

to the Middle East, for engineering customer support during detailed design and onsite startup. Assignments may

require multiple weeks at a plant site when needed.

  • Proficiency with process-simulation software, primarily Honeywell UniSim, and the ability to apply simulation

results to practical design, execution, and startup decisions.

  • Strong leadership and technical expertise in chemical-engineering principles and practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor engineers, transfer know-how, provide effective technical review, and strengthen

technical bench capability.

  • Demonstrated ability to multiply personal impact through better systems, tools, work practices, documentation,

and reusable engineering knowledge.

  • Ability to own, manage, and drive key projects, technical initiatives, and high-consequence decisions to positive

outcomes.

  • Ability to recognize and engage the appropriate engineering, project, construction, commissioning, operations,

vendor, customer, Technology Specialist, and leadership stakeholders.

  • Solutions-oriented with strong problem-solving, decision-making, analytical, and engineering-judgment skills.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, including the ability to communicate technical risks and

recommendations to technical and nontechnical stakeholders.

  • Strong prioritization and time-management skills across multiple licensed projects, customer commitments, and

startup-support needs.

  • Self-driven, coachable, collaborative, and committed to continued growth as a practicing engineer and senior

technical leader.

WE VALUE

  • Advanced degree in Chemical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
  • 20+ years of natural gas processing experience.
  • 10+ years of experience in cryogenic gas processing, particularly NGL/LPG recovery.
  • Experience with the process-licensing business model and direct support of licensed-technology customers

through detailed design and startup.

  • Extended domestic or international plant-site assignments supporting commissioning, startup, performance

testing, troubleshooting, or operating stabilization.

  • Demonstrated success developing engineers and building global technical bench strength through mentoring,

review, field exposure, knowledge transfer, and reusable learning.

  • Experience creating or significantly improving design practices, simulation infrastructure, startup methods,

troubleshooting frameworks, checklists, technical standards, or other systems that improve execution quality

and consistency.

  • Deep awareness of and ability to manage key stakeholder relationships as a senior individual contributor.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple project, startup, customer-support, and technical-infrastructure

initiatives.

  • Ability to drive continuous improvement and innovation based on project execution, operating experience, and

customer needs.
