Job Description

Miyamoto’s Global Disaster Risk Management group is seeking an experienced Principal to support the management and implementation of disaster response, recovery, preparedness, and risk management programs worldwide.

Miyamoto responds to major disasters and complex emergencies globally, deploying multidisciplinary teams within 24–72 hours to support governments, communities, and international partners with critical response and recovery efforts. Miyamoto is currently supporting earthquake response and recovery programs in Venezuela and Colombia and maintains the capacity to rapidly mobilize teams for new emergencies.

In addition to disaster response, Miyamoto works with governments, international agencies, and other partners before disasters strike to strengthen preparedness, readiness, and disaster risk management systems.

The Principal will support global and in-country teams in managing complex programs from initial design and mobilization through implementation and closeout. This is a temporary, project-based position supporting critical disaster response and recovery efforts. The position requires strong program management, organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills and the ability to operate effectively in fast-moving international and emergency environments.

Key Responsibilities

• Support global and in-country teams in the day-to-day management and implementation of disaster response and recovery programs.
• Provide strategic and programmatic input into program design, work planning, implementation, and adaptation as conditions and priorities evolve.
• Coordinate across technical, program, operations, finance, procurement, and administrative specialists to ensure activities are implemented effectively and on schedule.
• Support rapid mobilization of personnel and resources following disasters, including deployment planning, staffing, logistics, budgeting, and operational coordination.
• Develop and maintain program work plans, implementation schedules, budgets, deliverables, and other management tools.
• Monitor program progress, identify implementation challenges and risks, and work with country and technical teams to develop practical solutions.
• Support program budgeting, expenditure monitoring, forecasting, procurement, contracting, and resource planning in coordination with finance and operations teams.
• Help ensure programs are implemented in accordance with donor requirements, organizational policies, contractual obligations, and applicable compliance requirements.
• Coordinate preparation and review of donor reports, technical deliverables, briefings, presentations, and other program documentation.
• Support engagement and coordination with government counterparts, donors, UN agencies, international organizations, NGOs, private-sector partners, and other stakeholders.
• Work closely with technical specialists to translate engineering and disaster risk management activities into clear program strategies, deliverables, and measurable results.
• Support development of new programs, proposals, budgets, scopes of work, and implementation approaches.
• Provide guidance and management support to program staff and consultants across multiple countries and time zones.
• Undertake international travel and short-term deployments to disaster-affected countries as required.

Qualifications and Experience

Education:

Master’s degree in civil engineering, disaster risk management, or a related field. Equivalent combinations of education and significant relevant professional experience may be considered.

Experience:

• Minimum 10 years of progressively responsible experience managing complex international programs, preferably in humanitarian assistance, disaster response and recovery, disaster risk management, international development, or a related field.
• Demonstrated experience managing multi-country or multi-stakeholder programs, including work planning, budgeting, implementation oversight, reporting, and coordination.
• Experience working with institutional donors and government-funded programs; experience with U.S. Government-funded programs strongly preferred.
• Experience working internationally and with multidisciplinary and culturally diverse teams.
• Direct experience in disaster response, post-disaster recovery, or other rapidly evolving operational environments is required.
• Experience managing or supporting geographically dispersed teams, consultants, and technical specialists.

Knowledge:

• Strong understanding of international program and project management principles and practices.
• Familiarity with disaster response, recovery, preparedness, resilience, and disaster risk management programming.
• Familiarity with engineering, built-environment, infrastructure, housing, and urban resilience programming is required.
• Understanding of donor compliance, budgeting, procurement, contracting, monitoring and reporting requirements.
• Knowledge of humanitarian and international coordination structures is required.

Skills:

• Exceptional program management and organizational skills, with demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills and ability to make sound decisions in fast-moving and sometimes ambiguous environments.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to synthesize complex technical and programmatic information clearly.
• Strong budgeting, planning, coordination, and reporting skills.
• Ability to work effectively across technical and non-technical teams and with senior government, donor, and institutional counterparts.
• Ability to work independently while maintaining close coordination with geographically dispersed teams.

Languages:

Professional fluency in English required. Spanish proficiency is strongly preferred. Additional language skills relevant to Miyamoto’s global operations are an advantage.

Additional Requirements:

• Willingness and ability to travel internationally, including on short notice following major disasters.
• Ability to work across international time zones and, during emergency activations, outside standard working hours when required.
• Ability to operate effectively in challenging, rapidly changing, and resource-constrained environments.

The salary range for this position is $80.00-$100.00 per hour. Salary offers are determined using a variety of factors, including but not limited to: years of experience, education, depth of knowledge, geographic location, and equity with internal staff.
