General Notes

University Health Services (UHS) is an on‐campus medical facility serving the students of UT Austin. Staff provide healthcare, public health leadership, and other services designed to protect and advance the health of students and support the well-being of the campus community.

  • There are multiple openings for this position.
  • This position will be for two semesters, starting Fall 2026, with the possibility of continued employment beyond the 2026-2027 academic year.

Purpose

The Student Clinical Assistant program allows UT students to support and assist providers and nursing staff with the care of patients at University Health Services (UHS) clinics while gaining paid, hands-on clinical experience and direct patient interaction to supplement their education.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain regular and punctual attendance for scheduled shifts
  • Follow departmental call out procedures for planned and unplanned absences
  • Maintain confidentiality and HIPAA/FERPA compliance
  • Maintain EHR (electronic health record)
  • Exhibit exceptional customer service, professionalism, and teamwork in all aspects of work
  • Perform patient intake
  • Collect vital signs, height/weight, confirm medications and allergies
  • Conduct Abbott Molecular POC testing
  • Confirm tetanus status for skin injuries
  • Maintain a clean work environment, including cleaning and stocking patient rooms
  • Perform department specific procedures/treatments such as vision testing, point of care testing, EKGs, application of Durable Medical Equipment (DME), vital signs, vetting up equipment for procedures, assisting/observing providers with procedures

Required Qualifications

  • 1 year of experience working or volunteering in a medical clinic or healthcare setting
  • UT Austin undergraduate student enrolled in 6 or more credit hours per semester
  • Sophomore/second year student or greater
  • Able to communicate clearly with patients and staff
  • Able to interact with others from various backgrounds, while treating all patients and staff with respect and dignity
  • Comfortable using Microsoft Outlook and Teams
  • Exceptional customer service skills when working with patients and staff
  • Must be able to commit to working 10 hours per week in shifts or 3+ hours during business hours (Monday - Friday 8am - 5 pm)

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certified Medical Assistant (MA)
  • Certified Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)
  • Certified Phlebotomist
  • Completion of 1 year in the UHS Volunteer program
  • Pre-Med field (Nursing, Pharmacy, Pre-Med, Physician Assistant, etc.)

Salary Range

$10.00

All students start at $10.00 and receive a $0.50 increase at the start of each fall semester after completing one academic year working with Healthyhorns.

Working Conditions

  • Will work in Primary Care 1 and Sports Medicine departments of University Health Services
  • May travel to other UHS clinics within the Student Services Building to escort patients or transport samples
  • Dress Code:
    • Scrubs are required (student assistants must provide their own scrubs, no preference on color)
    • Must wear close-toed shoes
    • Acrylic nails are not permitted
  • PPE fit testing is required upon hire and annually (this will be conducted by the department)
  • Standard office conditions, including operating a computer
  • May work around biohazards
  • Exposure to chemicals and commercial items typically found in offices, medical clinics, and building repairs/maintenance

Work Shift

  • Must be able to commit to a minimum of 10 hours per week
  • Must be able to commit to shifts of 3 hours or longer
  • Shifts will be completed during regular business hours, Monday – Friday, 8 am – 5 pm
