Independent Chair – Pride in Place Neighbourhood Board

Druids Heath (Voluntary Role)

An Independent Neighbourhood Chair is now being recruited to lead Druids Heath new community-led board as part of the Pride in Place Programme. The Chair will work closely with residents, the local MP, and community organisations to ensure that local voices are heard and reflected in future investment and priorities.

This is a unique opportunity to provide strategic leadership to a long-term, place-based initiative focused on strengthening communities and creating a thriving neighbourhood.

Each board will oversee community engagement, shape a shared local vision, and guide the future investment into each of the respective areas.

The recruitment process is being led by the local MP, supported by Birmingham City Council.

The Role

The Independent Chair will act as a trusted, impartial leader, bringing together residents, voluntary and community organisations, businesses, and public-sector partners around a shared vision for Druids Heath. The Chair will provide clear direction, foster collaboration, and ensure strong governance as the Neighbourhood Board is established and begins its work.

We are particularly keen to hear from individuals who live or work in Druids Heath, or who have strong and credible local connections. Suitable candidates may include community leaders, volunteers, educators, health professionals, faith leaders, local campaigners, or passionate residents looking to improve their local area through partnership working.

Key Initial Responsibilities

  • Lead the creation and establishment of the Neighbourhood Board, including its membership, governance arrangements, and approach to community engagement
  • Guide discussions on any proposed changes to the Pride in Place boundary or area name, ensuring decisions reflect local identity and priorities
  • Work with the Neighbourhood Board to develop the area’s first Pride in Place Plan, setting out a clear vision and investment priorities for submission to Government in November 2025

What We’re Looking For

You will bring:

  • Local credibility and respected leadership, even if this is their first leadership role
  • A strong understanding of the community
  • Excellent facilitation and relationship-building skills
  • A genuine commitment to the long-term success of Druids Heath

Time Commitment and Remuneration

This is a voluntary role, similar in nature to that of a charity trustee or school governor. To ensure inclusivity, a small allowance may be available for individuals who would otherwise be unable to undertake the role. Any allowance would be agreed with the lead local MP and Birmingham City Council, and full details will be published online.

While the precise time commitment cannot be confirmed at this stage, the role is significant. An initial commitment of approximately three hours per week is expected, which may evolve over time.

Support

The Chair will be supported by the lead local MP and Birmingham City Council acting as the initial accountable body, including access to training and development. Additional support will be provided by Government to new Chairs across the region.

Code of conduct

The new Chair will be required to sign-up to a Code of Conduct and to declare any interests, based on the Seven Principles of Public Life (the Nolan Principles).

The Seven Principles of Public Life - GOV.UK

As vested members of the community, it is reasonable that the Chair will have interests that may indirectly benefit from the Board’s work. This does not preclude individuals from becoming Chair, but interests must be declared, and Chairs should recuse themselves from relevant decisions.

Please note that appointment is subject to a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.
