Summary

Join the Office of Youth Services Pretrial Team and make a meaningful impact for youth and their families. As a Juvenile Pretrial Officer, you play a vital role in strengthening community safety and supporting fair justice practices across Prince William County. This position offers the opportunity to guide individuals through the pretrial process, ensure accountability, and help reduce unnecessary incarceration. Your work directly contributes to a more efficient court system, safer neighborhoods, and better outcomes for the people we serve. If you’re motivated by meaningful public service and the chance to make a measurable impact, this role puts you at the heart of that mission.

About This Role:

The Juvenile Pretrial Officer serves as a key link between the court, the community, and the youth involved in the justice system. In this role, you will conduct intake assessments, supervise youth awaiting adjudication, and provide the court with accurate, timely information about each youth’s progress while under supervision. You help ensure compliance with court-ordered conditions through consistent monitoring, documentation, and communication with families, schools, and service providers.

Beyond accountability, this position is deeply rooted in support. You guide youth and families toward needed resources, coordinate with community partners, and promote stability during a critical period in the legal process. As a Juvenile Pretrial Officer, you play a vital role in balancing public safety, court appearance, and youth well-being, all while advancing equitable, trauma-informed practices that strengthen outcomes for both youth and the county.

Position Overview:

This is a full-time in-person position with full employee benefits. The selected candidate must be able to work independently, demonstrate strong professionalism, and maintain accurate documentation in a fast-paced environment. This position requires daily driving throughout the county and conducting field-based visitation, including home visits, school visits, court attendance, and community partner meetings. Some evenings and weekends may be required based on court needs, supervision schedules, or the needs of the organization. Job duties include but are not limited to:

  • Face-to-face supervision of youth on pretrial status and monitoring compliance with court-ordered conditions
  • Field-based visitation including home visits, school visits, and other required community contacts while verifying compliance, such as school attendance and curfew, through direct contact and collateral verification
  • Routine communication with youth and parent/guardians to support compliance and accountability
  • Timely, accurate, and factual documentation for court hearings and case updates
  • Sworn testimonies in court, as needed, regarding factual case information and documented compliance activities
  • Coordination with court stakeholders, schools, service providers, and internal team members to support case requirements
  • Referrals and resource information to youth and families, as appropriate
  • Confidentiality and complete case documentation in accordance with policy and procedures

Minimum Requirements:

High School diploma or GED and 5 years of related experience in performing community supervision of probationers and pretrial court defendants, performing case investigations, managing a caseload, and making referrals to services based on identified needs.

Preferences:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Human Services, or related field
  • 1-3 years of progressively responsible experience in working with and providing case management services to at-risk youth
  • Bilingual proficiency (Spanish/English preferred)
  • Demonstrated excellent customer service skills, including the ability to engage youth and families with professionalism, empathy, and respect in challenging or sensitive situations
  • Strong time management and organizational skills, including the ability to prioritize competing deadlines, manage a high-volume workload, and ensure timely documentation and follow-up
  • Experience working with justice-involved youth, families, or vulnerable populations in court services, probation, youth services, social services, or related settings
  • Knowledge of juvenile justice processes, court procedures, and confidentiality standards
  • Strong written communication skills, including experience preparing and reviewing court reports, case notes, and court-ready documentation

Special Requirements:

  • In accordance with Department of Juvenile Justice regulations, the selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment background check, including local, state, and federal criminal clearances, before receiving a final offer.
  • A valid driver’s license is required, and the incumbent must be able to operate a county vehicle as needed.
  • The Office of Youth Services (OYS) role is also required to provide emergency human services support in the event of a disaster or emergency.

Work Schedule:
