About Us

Action Against Hunger USA (ACF USA) is part of the Action Against Hunger International network, a global leader in the fight against hunger operating in over 50 countries with programs focused on nutrition, health, climate resilience, food security, and emergency response. We manage operations in Kenya, South Sudan, Somalia, Tanzania, Uganda, Ethiopia, Zambia, and Haiti, working alongside communities to address the root causes of hunger and strengthen resilience.

Action Against Hunger USA is seeking a proactive Press + Media Officer to lead our U.S. media strategy and strengthen our visibility and thought leadership.

About the Role

This role will develop and execute earned media strategies, build relationships with journalists and media outlets, create compelling press materials, and identify opportunities to highlight our global humanitarian work. The Press + Media Officer will also manage media inquiries, support crisis communications, prepare spokespeople for interviews, and track media performance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute earned media plans across national, regional, trade, broadcast, and digital outlets.
  • Write and pitch press releases, statements, media advisories, op-eds, talking points, and briefing materials.
  • Build and maintain relationships with journalists, producers, editors, and sector influencers.
  • Identify thought leadership opportunities tied to humanitarian crises, advocacy priorities, research, and organizational campaigns.
  • Prepare executives and subject matter experts for media interviews.
  • Manage incoming media inquiries and support issues and crisis communications.
  • Monitor media coverage, public conversations, and social sentiment.
  • Track media performance and use insights to strengthen future outreach.

What We’re Looking For

  • 3-5+ years of progressive experience in public relations, media relations, journalism, communications, or agency roles, preferably with nonprofit, humanitarian, advocacy, or social impact experience.
  • Demonstrated success securing earned media coverage.
  • Strong writing, editing, pitching, and messaging skills.
  • Experience preparing press materials and briefing spokespeople.
  • Ability to translate complex humanitarian or technical information into clear, compelling stories.
  • Knowledge of crisis communications and sensitive issue management.
  • Strong judgment, discretion, project management, and stakeholder coordination skills.
  • Experience in the nonprofit, humanitarian, advocacy, or social impact sector is preferred.
