Press Material Handler 2
The Press Material Handler 2 is responsible for removing, flexing, jogging, and stacking printed sheets, folded signatures, labels or other in-process products from discharge unit of printing press or adhesive coating equipment. Review signatures for smearing, register issues, bad folds, etc. and notify the Pressroom.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Remove folded signatures from web press and place signatures on pallet or skid for removal to warehouse or binding areas.
- May adjust stacking mechanism on press according to paper dimensions.
- Loads and unloads materials onto or from pallets, carts and trays.
- Conveys materials from storage or work sites to designated areas, using hand truck, electric dolly, or other device.
- Counts, weighs, and records number of units of materials moved or handled on daily production sheet.
- Attaches identifying tags or labels to materials or marks information on cases, bales, or other containers.
- Stacks or assembles materials into bundles and bands bundles together, using banding machine and clincher.
- May use automated equipment and/or operate industrial truck or electric hoist to assist in loading or moving materials and products.
- May assist Press Crew with make-ready of the equipment such as retrieving plates, hanging plates, recycling/storing plates etc.
- May perform in process quality checks of printed materials looking for blemishes, scratches or other print defects.
- Performs other related duties and participates in special projects as assigned.
Basic Qualifications:
- Equivalent to 8th grade plus additional classes
- Education: Equivalent to 8th grade plus additional classes.
- Reasoning Ability: Capable of applying common sense understanding to carry out simple written or oral instructions.
- Mathematics: Able to read, copy, and record figures; may involve basic addition and subtraction.
- Language Skills: Able to read simple instructions, recognize basic vocabulary, and speak in complete sentences using standard grammar and tenses.
- Able to stock, move, jog, arrange, unload, count and rotate items on/off printing press equipment in accordance with operating instructions or under guidance of a press operator or supervisor.
- May require knowledge of operation of automatic counters and tabulate counts for jobs.
- Able to complete appropriate forms relating to stock description, quantity, unit of issue, and the labeling requirements for incoming and outgoing materials.
- Good skill in the use of manual dollies, carts or hand trucks and hand tools used in material handling tasks such as hammers, pliers, strapping and stretch wrapping tools and equipment, tape fasteners, metal band sheers and related equipment.
- A team player who works well with others.
Desired Skills and Abilities:
- Good knowledge of general warehouse layout, item identification codes, basic warehouse procedures, and the storage areas in order to be able to place or pull paper stock, signatures and materials in accordance with standard procedures.
Physical Requirements
- Job requires ability to exert 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
- Constant activities include reaching in all directions, use of hands and vibration
- Frequent activities include lift/carry 20 to 50 pounds, standing walking, flexing wrists
- Occasionally lift/carry 50 pounds or more, sitting, stooping, talking, hearing
- Good vision requirements including near acuity, depth perception, field of vision
- Must be able to tolerate loud noise levels and occasional exposure to atmospheric conditions and other environmental factors.
- Constant use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is required due to the nature of the work environment.
