Summary

Under general supervision, the Pretreatment Compliance Specialist provides appropriate support to ensure the protection of the regional wastewater system and the environment from adverse impact due to the discharge of hazardous or toxic wastes.

Posted range is the starting salary. Pay rate offered is based on experience

Examples of duties

  • Assists with the implementation of the industrial waste pretreatment and surcharge program by monitoring discharges from industrial users and commercial properties in accordance with State and Federal requirements.
  • Performs precise calibrations of sampling equipment; performs quality control assurance sampling; labels all samples and logs chain of custody forms for each sample at a level necessary to comply with all applicable State and Federal requirements.
  • Inspects industrial and commercial users by gathering records and documentation of past pretreatment activities of each industry; reviews and analyzes documentation to determine areas to check for compliance; investigates proper handling of wastes and manifests; provides information and advice or training to each industry or commercial property; maintains clear and concise communication with the industry or commercial property of the findings and possible corrective actions to be taken.
  • Develops and maintains technical documents and tracking systems by creating and maintaining database files for each industry and commercial property to track sampling and correspondence; organizes and maintains filing system for hard copy submittals; collects and evaluates data submitted by industries and commercial properties to determine compliance status with the issued permit; provides approvals and recommendations for further actions on submitted data.
  • Assists with enforcement actions by initiating enforcement proceedings and negotiating resolutions for permit violations; develops and generates enforcement documents; gathers information to identify new industrial and commercial users; assists with updating the industrial waste user information and identifying any new industries or commercial properties that discharge nondomestic waste to the regional wastewater system.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited (4) four-year college or university. Experience may substitute for the education requirement on a year-for-year basis.
  • One (1) or more years of experience in pretreatment compliance activities or in a similar position.

Supplemental information

  • TCEQ Class D wastewater operator license and TCEQ Class D water operator license, or ability to obtain within six (6) months after hire.
