About the Position

As a Temporary Pre-Tabulation Ballot Processor II , you will assist in facilitating the pre-tabulation ballot processing for Maricopa County Elections. Working as part of an experienced bipartisan team, you will accurately organize and prepare incoming early ballots of many formats. In larger elections, you will assist with election preparation activities and training as needed. This position requires the employee to be in the office/field or customer-facing for all hours worked.

We Require

  • Experience utilizing a calculator or similar device
  • High school diploma or GED

Other Requirements

  • Must successfully complete a background screening
  • Must be eligible to vote in Arizona
  • Mandatory overtime during all election cycles

Job Contributions

  • Follows detailed step-by-step instructions to ensure work is auditable and process compliant for both basic and complex processes
  • Organizes, processes, and reconciles complex ballots, including alternate format ballots
  • Verifies that the physical count of ballots and affidavits for any ballot format being processed is in balance and corresponds to the written entries logged
  • Accurately identifies and documents any discrepancies between affidavit and ballot codes for each affidavit packet handled, and ensures proper processing of damaged ballots for audit purposes, including ballot formats with a higher level of complexity
  • Recognizes and prepares basic and complex chain-of-custody paperwork forballot formats being delivered to the Ballot Tabulation Center
  • Assists with training staff assigned to the area as needed

Working Conditions

  • Some work shift flexibility is needed based on operational needs
  • The usual work schedule is set as 8 hours, Monday-Friday, but may require:
    • Working holidays/weekends
    • Occasionally working only 4 hours a day
    • Occasionally working up to 10 hours a day
    • May be asked to take occasional days off when business needs do not require full staffing
  • Requires the ability to sit for extended periods, to meet high-volume deadlines, and to use upper extremity repetitive motion
  • Repetitive reading is required to compare affidavit packet codes with ballot codes
  • Requires the ability to occasionally lift floor-to-shoulder or lower from shoulder-to-waist up to 25 pounds and carry for 100 feet and to push/pull up 50 pounds for 200 feet
  • Must not engage in any political discussion during the election
  • Attendance and punctuality are critical

Selection Procedure - Maricopa County

The Maricopa County Human Resources Department reserves the right to admit to the selection process only those candidates considered to be the most highly qualified. Those selected will be assessed based on the evaluation of listed education and experience. The hiring authority will interview and select the successful candidate from a list provided by Human Resources.
