UH Lakewood Medical CenterKansas City, Missouri
Recovery Room UHLMC
Full time

The pre anesthesia assessment nurse works with the anesthesia providers to plan, and organize all aspects of care for scheduled surgical patients. The PAT anesthesia protocols allows the nurse to gather the clinical information necessary for the safe and effective administration of anesthesia through a process that is convenient for patients, physicians, and results in efficient surgical throughput. The Pre Anesthesia Nurse must coordinate care through a complex multidisciplinary team of providers both University Health providers and providers outside of the University Health System. This requires the nurse to request, obtain and review outside records that are pertinent to the patient’s care. After a thorough review of systems, chart review, lab and test result review and patient interview the pre anesthesia assessment nurse can initiate remedial action if warranted by the severity of the scheduled surgery and the patient’s condition. The nurse works closely with the Internal Medicine, Cardiology and Pulmonology providers to insure patients are optimized for a safe anesthesia and positive surgical outcome. This process minimizes delays, postponement and surgical cancellations increasing patient satisfaction and OR utilization. The pre anesthesia assessment nurse also provides patient education in how to prepare for surgery, what to expect and what they will physically encounter during their surgical stay and how that may affect their care after surgery. The pre anesthesia assessment nurse provides patient-specific instructions and education (medications, diet, and infection prevention) for the day of surgery.
