Job Description

Summary:

The Physician Assistant (PA) or Nurse Practitioner (NP) in the Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU) at RGH provides expert clinical care for critically ill patients. The APP will work in collaboration with ICU physicians, Advanced Practice Providers (APPs), nursing staff, and other multidisciplinary team members to deliver comprehensive care. This role focuses on patient assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, and implementation of interventions, along with continuous monitoring of patient progress in a high-acuity environment.

Schedule: Rotating Days / Weekends / Limited Nights

Key Responsibilities

  • Assess, diagnose, and manage critically ill patients
  • Develop and implement treatment plans in collaboration with the ICU team
  • Manage ventilators, vasoactive medications, and advanced ICU therapies
  • Perform bedside procedures as credentialed
  • Participate in daily rounds and multidisciplinary care planning
  • Educate patients, families, and clinical team members

Preferred Skills & Experience

  • 3 years working as an Advanced Practice Provider preferred
  • ICU/Critical Care or Hospital Medicine experience preferred
  • Skills: Proficiency preferred in invasive procedures commonly performed in the ICU including Central Venous Catheter and Arterial Catheter placement, Hemodialysis Catheter Placement, Ventilator Management, Thoracentesis, Paracentesis, Lumbar Puncture, Chest Tube placement, and Endotracheal Intubation is a plus. Strong interpersonal communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Moderate - Clinical - Moderate clinical roles are patient facing roles that require continual movement, including standing, walking, and lifting 20–50 lbs., along with pushing and pulling medical equipment and assisting with patient positioning. Employees perform frequent bending, twisting, and reaching while completing fine motor tasks in busy or confined clinical environments. High sensory acuity is essential for monitoring patient status and responding to alarms or safety concerns. Emotional and cognitive demands are substantial, involving decision-making under pressure, responding to emergencies, and maintaining sustained focus. Environmental exposures include infectious agents, bodily fluids, chemicals, and radiation. TB testing, mask-fit testing, and physical exams are common requirements.

The listed base pay range is a good faith representation of current potential base pay for a successful full time applicant. It may be modified in the future and eligible for additional pay components. Pay is determined by factors including experience, relevant qualifications, specialty, internal equity, location, and contracts.
