Temporary maximum-term opportunity until 18 December 2026 (approximately 12 weeks, depending on commencement date).

About the team

The PR & Communications Specialist role sits in the Marketing & Communications Unit within the Marketing & Fundraising division. The Marketing & Communications Unit is responsible for promoting, positioning, and protecting Cancer Council’s brand and reputation across NSW, and supports the whole organisation.

About the role:

This position is being offered on a maximum-term contract basis until 18th of December 2026 to provide leave cover across the Marketing & Communications team. The successful candidate will support the delivery of PR and communications activities across the organisation during this period.

The PR & Communications Specialist plays a critical role in helping Cancer Council NSW meet its organisational objectives through public relations and communications activity. This role is responsible for executing PR and communications across our various functions, responding to reactive media requests, creating external messaging, sourcing real life stories, working with high profile ambassadors, liaising with relevant internal and external stakeholders, and effectively managing issues and opportunities.

Key responsibilities of the role:

  • Support delivery of PR strategies and campaigns across key Cancer Council NSW functions, driving measurable outcomes.
  • Develop and distribute engaging communications content across traditional, digital and online channels.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with media, spokespeople, ambassadors and key stakeholders, while pitching newsworthy stories and managing media enquiries.
  • Source and share compelling real-life stories, while supporting reputation management and corporate communications.
  • Monitor, evaluate and optimise PR activity using agreed performance measures and insights.
  • Collaborate with Marketing, Digital and key stakeholders to deliver integrated campaigns and uphold brand standards.
  • Act as a trusted communications advisor, educating stakeholders on best practice use of Cancer Council NSW's verbal brand.
  • Support key corporate communications projects and organisational publications.

About you

Essential:

  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in PR, communications or media relations
  • Strong storytelling, content development and media engagement skills.
  • Excellent communication, stakeholder management and influencing abilities.
  • Highly organised, proactive and able to manage multiple priorities under pressure.
  • Flexible and responsive, including availability for out-of-hours media enquiries.

Desirable:

  • Tertiary qualifications in Communications, Marketing or a related discipline, with strong media networks.
  • Experience delivering impactful, integrated PR campaigns and results within budget constraints.
