Job Description
This controls-focused role is responsible for designing, integrating, and optimizing electronic control systems and simulation models for Cummins powertrain products. The position involves translating customer and product requirements into functional control strategies, developing and tuning control algorithms, and validating integrated hardware-software systems.
The specialist contributes to simulation model development, improves model performance, and collaborates across cross-functional teams to ensure high-quality, reliable, and efficient powertrain systems. The role also includes technical leadership, mentoring junior engineers, and driving continuous improvement in engineering processes and tools.
Key Responsibilities
- Decompose product and customer requirements into functional requirements and develop control strategies and algorithms.
- Design, develop, and tune open-loop and closed-loop electronic control systems for powertrain applications.
- Lead integration and optimization of Powertrain/PowerTruck simulation models using MATLAB/Simulink and related tools.
- Improve simulation runtime efficiency through model optimization and reduced-order modeling techniques.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams and powertrain partners to integrate driveline control and plant models.
- Perform system-level validation, including simulation, calibration, and Design Verification Plan & Report (DVP&R) activities.
- Investigate, troubleshoot, and resolve product and system-level issues using structured problem-solving methods.
- Contribute to the development and enhancement of controls development processes, tools, and methodologies.
- Translate stakeholder and customer needs into system requirements and ensure traceability throughout the lifecycle.
- Support product verification and validation activities through analysis, simulation, and physical testing.
- Lead or contribute to projects with moderate to high complexity, ensuring quality, delivery, and performance goals.
- Review work of junior engineers to ensure robust, scalable, and reusable design solutions.
- Coordinate work across technicians and junior team members and support knowledge transfer initiatives.
- Maintain comprehensive technical documentation for designs, simulations, and validation activities.
Skills
- Strong expertise in powertrain systems, engine, and aftertreatment controls
- Proficiency in MATLAB, Simulink, and scripting tools for model development and simulation.
- Experience with AUTOSAR/CSAR architectures and control system development.
- Hands-on experience with GIT/version control and model synchronization
- Strong understanding of 1-D simulation tools such as AMESim, GT Suite, AVL Cruise, or Autonomie (preferred).
- Knowledge of CyberApps or equivalent Simulink-based modeling frameworks
- Understanding of on-highway powertrain components and system interactions
- Familiarity with smart powertrain features (e.g., ADEPT) is an added advantage.
- Ability to apply systems engineering principles, including requirements management and systems thinking.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and product problem-solving skills.

Experience
- 5–7+ years of experience in powertrain controls, modeling, and simulation
- Proven experience in model integration, system optimization, and validation

Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, or a related STEM field with 7+ years of experience,
OR - Master’s degree in a relevant engineering discipline with 5+ years of experience
- Prior experience in a senior or lead engineering role with demonstrated technical problem-solving capability.
- Knowledge of MS Office tools is preferred.
- May require compliance with export control regulations.
