Background & Purpose

Shell Energy India (SEI) serves Indian customers as a licenced power trader and is expanding its power trading activity as part of its broader gas, power and environmental products portfolio.
The Power Trader is responsible for executing power trading transactions and optimizing the power portfolio in line with SEI’s approved mandate and Shell’s control framework, delivering value while ensuring strong operational discipline, governance, and risk management.

Where you fit in

The role sits within SEI’s Power Trading set‑up and interfaces closely with Commercial Operations, Treasury/ Finance, Market Risk, Credit, Legal and Compliance, and (where relevant) operations/ asset interfaces to ensure timely scheduling, settlement readiness, and adherence to operating procedures for exchange participation.

Accountabilities and Key Responsibilities

1) Trading Strategy, Market Analysis & Position Management

  • Analyse market conditions and develop/ implement trading strategies; manage exposures along the curve within mandated authorities.
  • Track market structure and product opportunities relevant to SEI’s strategy (e.g., exchange segments and green/ term products). Share market intelligence across the trading network; contribute to a strong team culture and collaborative decision‑making.

2) Trade Execution (Exchange / Bilateral as applicable)

  • Execute power trades within approved authorities; maintain high standards of accuracy and error‑free execution.
  • Ensure deals are executed with clear risk articulation and aligned to the desk’s agreed positioning and constraints.

3) Operational Discipline, Scheduling & Settlement Readiness

  • Coordinate with operations/ commercial operations on demand/ position requirements and ensure timely submission/ communication required for exchange execution and delivery.
  • Work with Treasury/ Finance to ensure pre‑funding/ settlement readiness and timely confirmations aligned to the operating procedure for exchange trading.
  • Support reconciliation and post‑trade controls as required by the operating procedure (e.g., reporting and reconciliation expectations).

4) Risk, Controls, Compliance & Governance

  • Understand and communicate the risks being taken; comply with Shell control framework and all regulatory guidelines relevant to trading.
  • Partner with Compliance/ Legal/ Credit/ Risk on trading venue and process requirements and maintain appropriate records/approvals in line with internal controls

5) Portfolio Growth & New Business Models

  • Work with Business Development/ Origination to assess and execute new business models and portfolio opportunities while balancing time between execution and business development.

6) Coaching & Capability Building

  • Coach and educate colleagues (including cross‑functional stakeholders) and contribute to building power trading capability within SEI.

Dimensions and Key Challenges

  • Operate in a dynamic market environment requiring rapid decisions, strong analytical judgment, and disciplined risk management.
  • Maintain high operational integrity under tight market timelines, ensuring pre‑trade approvals, accurate execution, and post‑trade controls.
  • Influence across multiple functions (Risk, Treasury, Legal, Compliance, Operations) to ensure end‑to‑end readiness and governance.

What we need from you

Essential

  • Demonstrable experience in power (and/ or gas) trading, including market analysis/ fundamentals and commodity price risk management.
  • Proven capability to execute trades with strong attention to detail and governance discipline; ability to communicate risk clearly.
  • Strong analytical, numeracy, and problem‑solving skills; strong communication and ability to collaborate across functions.

Preferred

  • Understanding of exchange trading mechanics and operating discipline (e.g., day‑ahead timelines, pre‑funding, reconciliation) in an exchange environment.
  • Familiarity with Indian power market constructs and exchange segments referenced in SEI’s India exchange strategy (e.g., term/ green product focus in TAM/ GTAM and evolving market design context).
  • Comfort working with trading platforms and integrated workflows (nomination/ bidding, strategy creation, ETRM/ ERP integration).

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree (Engineering/ Science/ Commerce) required; post‑graduate qualification preferred (Commercial/ Business/ Finance/ Economics/ Engineering).
