Under the supervision of Utilities Supervisor or their on-ice representative, isrequiredtooperateand monitor all mechanical equipment within the Power Plant. Coordinate with the Lead Power Plant Mechanic the regular maintenance and irregular maintenance of generators within the plant. Work closely with linemen and other infrastructure personnel to resolve issues. Participate in goal-setting processes and strategic planning for mission support with Lead Power Plant Mechanic. Contribute to a safe working environment byparticipatingin employee trainings and identification and mitigation of environmental and job hazards. Maintain effective communications between departments. Routinelyutilizeindependent judgment and discretion to solve problems andidentifypotential issues.

Position Responsibilities

  • Maintains a safe workplace program and ensures that safety is the highest priority in the workplace.

  • Complies withall ASC Environmental, Safety and Health (ESH), Waste Management and Quality Assurance requirements, goals,policiesand procedures.  Provides documentation to these divisions as necessary to ensure adequate and legaldocumentation.  

  • Provides uninterrupted medium voltage electrical service whileoperatingto the highest standards.

  • Monitors Power Plant parameters and makes necessary adjustments to ensure operations are within established guidelines.

  • Monitors diesel engine/generators and associated switch gear parameters.

  • Monitors waste heat recovery system, wind turbineproductionand auxiliary equipment parameters.

  • Makes adjustments todiesel engine/generators and auxiliary systems toinsurePower Plant isoperatingwith the highest level of efficiency and reliability possible. Monitors andmakes adjustments topower distribution system by adding and removing feeders asrequired

  • Maintains operating logbooks and databases asrequired

  • Starts, places inserviceand secures dieselgeneratorsas necessary.

  • Maintains identified operational hours spread of diesel engine/generators to better forecastmaintenance.  

  • Responds to unscheduled equipment failures withappropriate immediateandsubsequentactions while on shift.

  • Assists the Power Plant Mechanic with scheduled maintenance and repairs.

  • Maintains cleanliness of Power Plant facilities including diesel engines.

  • Advises theUtilities Supervisor or their on-ice representativeof the status of power production equipment and systems.

  • Works a rotating shift; day,swingor night shift

  • Trains Power PlantOperator’son mechanical equipment as directed.

  • Complies withapplicable Safety, Environment, Health, and Waste Management policies and procedures.

  • Responsible formaintaininga safe workplace and ensuring that safety is the highest priority in the workplace.

  • Supports the achievement of ASC metrics, whether metrics are directly or indirectly affected by this position’s work activities.

  • Communicates professionally, both orally and in writing, with their superiors and peers as needed to relay information they needin order tobe successful in their jobs. This includes, but is not limited to, staff meetings, performance appraisals, job requirements, division metrics, projects, Quality Standard Procedures, and safety practices.

  • May berequiredto work outside on various jobsites in extremecold weatherand environmentally challenging conditions.

  • Interacts with other partner companies, the National Science Foundation,militaryand other agency officials, both over the telephone and in person. Is kind, courteous,cooperativeand professionalat all times

  • Participate in dormitory chores while deployed to Antarctica.

  • Performs other duties asrequired

RequiredEducation, Experience, Certificates and Licenses

  • High School diploma orGED

  • Minimum 2 years Power Plant experiencerequired(Diesel, Gas Turbine, Nuclear, Hydroelectric or Renewable) Equivalent experience indiesel engine or electrical maintenance experienced accepted in lieu of Power Plant experience.

ExpectedSkills and Competencies:

  • Mechanical aptitude with the ability to handle multiple tasks at once isrequired  

  • Working knowledge of the principles and practices applied in the operation of diesel electric generating equipment isrequired

  • Thorough knowledge of the methods, hazards, and safety precautions related to diesel engines and diesel engine driven electric generators isrequired

  • Ability tomaintaina professional attitude and to work efficiently in a stressful environment isrequired

  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office.

Preferred

  • High school graduate or GED

  • Previousexperience with remote Polar Logistics operations

  • Diesel Power generation experience

  • Strong background in diesel engine and electrical troubleshooting

Physical and/or Other Requirements

  • Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods

  • Successful completion of Medical and Dental examinations required by the NSF for deployment to Antarctica

  • Successful completion of drug screening and background check required by employer

  • Successful completion of Federal Background Check required by the NSF

  • Must be willing and able to lift and move items, parts, assemblies, and equipment up to the safety regulation maximum as required by the position.

  • Must be willing and able to perform physical activities including heavy lifting, climbing in and out of equipment, crawling, and working outdoors in extreme cold as required by the position.

  • Mustparticipatein community programs, such as “house-mouse” (chores), “daisy-picking” (cleaning-up around the station), recycling efforts & safetyobjectives

  • Valid Driver’s License issued in the United States

  • No clearance requirement but the contract and/or the site requires US Citizenship to be approved for access. (includes NACI / T1, MRPT, CAC): Must be able to obtain andmaintainfacility credentials/authorization. Note: US Citizenship isrequiredfor facility credentials/authorization at this work location.
