Power Plant Operator Lead

Seeking a full-time Power Plant Operator Lead. This role performs hands-on inspection, preventative maintenance, condition monitoring, troubleshooting, and corrective/emergency repairs on power plant electrical production and distribution systems. Reports to the Power Plant Manager/Power Plant Supervisor. All candidates must pass a pre-employment drug test and background check.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform hands-on routine inspection, preventative maintenance, condition monitoring, troubleshooting, and corrective/emergency repairs on power plant electrical production and distribution systems, associated local control systems, and PULSE/SCADA systems (computer servers and interface controllers); diagnose problems and repair/replace defective parts as required.
• Perform hands-on electrical maintenance and repair of power production electrical, mechanical, and auxiliary systems for power generation facilities operating at 5-85MW and greater total output with diesel-driven prime movers.
• Perform hands-on inspection, operation, and maintenance of paralleling and main medium voltage switchgear systems, local/remote monitoring and metering, SCADA and PLC control systems, and alarm response to ensure maximum system reliability.
• Perform hands-on inspection, operation, maintenance, and testing of fuel receiving and distribution systems, including tanks, pumps, leak detection, fuel distribution/inventory, order scheduling, and reporting.
• Perform hourly genset and feeder readings and record on required documentation.
• Inspect gensets for leaks and poor running condition; annotate faults on required documentation.
• Submit daily, weekly, and monthly power plant/electrical distribution reports and CDRLs to the Power Plant Manager/Supervisor.
• Inspect operational activities for safety precautions and instruct employees on occupational hazards; responsible for employee conduct and compliance with safety policies, OSHA, and NFPA requirements.
• Coordinate environmental testing, permitting, and compliance activities with the US Military/Prime Contractor designated representative; responsible for facility operation within all environmental and regulatory requirements.
• Maintain technical library and record-keeping documenting all required procedures - daily/weekly/monthly reports, LOTO records, sanctions to test, permits to work, switching programs, hourly check sheets, meter readings, equipment service/maintenance/inspection/testing documents, black start procedure, etc.
• Responsible for power plant communications activities, including coordination with generator mechanics, power plant operators, and the MV electrical team.
• Respond to emergency calls regarding power generation equipment breakdowns and unit outages; interpret and apply corrective action based on data readings and equipment check results.
• Serve as the single point of communication between the Power Plant and MV distribution Manager/team leader during switching activities, energizing/de-energizing feeders, and distribution fault finding.
• As workload/mission/staffing levels dictate, assist with daily power plant operations, including bringing gensets online/offline, synchronizing/paralleling, hourly readings, fueling, electrical distribution installation/maintenance, and facility upkeep.
• As workload/mission/staffing levels dictate, assist MV/LV electrical/power plant operations teams with installation/removal of electrical distribution equipment.
• Request and retrieve service/maintenance/repair parts from the Prime Contractor Consolidated Material Warehouse and transport to the service location.
• Attend and deliver daily safety meetings/stand-downs in accordance with VGS and Prime Contractor policies.
• Serve as the most senior Power Plant Operator/team leader for power plant equipment at the assigned work location; take ownership of the power plant to ensure repairs, maintenance, and overhauls are performed to the highest quality and safety standards.
• Assist Prime Contractor Procurement/Materials staff with acquiring repair parts/consumables by supplying genset model data, part numbers, descriptions, and technical oversight as needed.
• Attend formal OEM-specific genset and/or controls training as required.
• Maintain accountability for power plant staff, tools, manuals, and equipment status (FMC/NMC).
• Ensure less experienced power plant operation team members perform services/minor repairs to high quality standards.

Required Qualifications

• Minimum 3 years as a Power Plant Lead Operator or equivalent.
• Minimum 3 years of experience inspecting, operating, monitoring, maintaining, and repairing multi-diesel driven generator power generation facilities with an output capacity of 5-85MW or greater.
• Hands-on experience inspecting, testing, and repairing electrical system components, including generators, transformers, transfer switches, switchgear, PLC controls, and fuel monitoring/delivery systems.
• Experience providing prime power O&M services to clients.
• Familiarity with the Fundamentals of Electrical Safety based on NFPA 70E standards.
• Knowledge of occupational hazards for electrical and mechanical trades and related safety practices for installation, maintenance, and repair of power generator systems.
• Ability to rescue an injured person from an electrical conductor.
• Knowledge of Lockout/Tagout procedures.
• Proactive nature and strong interpersonal skills collaborating with senior managers, site management, local/international subcontractors, US military representatives, and local officials.
• Ability to read, understand, and apply information in equipment manuals, facility documents (drawings/specifications), O&M manuals, SOPs, emergency response procedures, and safety data sheets.
• Ability to interpret data readings and equipment check results to identify problems and take appropriate corrective action.
• Understanding of power generation equipment startup/shutdown and basic maintenance procedures.
• Experience using measuring devices such as Vernier calipers, micrometers, and dial bore gauges.

Compensation & Benefits

• Total Compensation: $128,000 - $130,000
