As Power Electronics Engineer, you will report to the Valve Converter Electrical Team Lead within the Valve Converter Engineering & Technology Function (Team who deliver development projects and customer projects for the HVDC Valve Converter). The successful candidate will be part of a highly motivated, dynamic and rapidly growing team of engineers working on the project activities related to HVDC applications. This is a very exciting and dynamic field of power engineering in which GE’s leading contribution has worldwide recognition.
The role gives an excellent opportunity for a motivated candidate to innovate, expand their design skill and personal development within an internationally recognised expert in this exciting field. Whilst based at the HVDC Centre of Excellence in Stafford there will be international travel opportunities to collaborate with other GE units, test laboratories and customer sites.
Responsibilities:
Use design tools to specify converter valves and deliver valve design report to support tender and project.
Generate technical documentations (such as valve design, type test specification, routine test specification and site pre-commissioning specifications) to deliver converter valves at project stage
Working against customer specification at project stage (Clause by Clause, Risk analysis).
Integration with other engineering departments for product definition (System design, Main Scheme, Layout, Commercial).
Testing and validation for high voltage power electronic including IGBT and thyristor and passive component used in valve converter.
Design or application experience on IGBT and thyristor driver circuit.
Design experience on the protection and control circuit for IGBT and thyristor.
Performing routine and type test specifications and pre-commissioning testing.
Product support during complete life cycle from development to tender and commissioning of project
Support site activities during installation of the valve converter, pre-commissioning and training for customer.
Expectation to travel 20% of the time across the world.
Candidate profile
The candidate will probably be educated to degree level in electrical or electronic engineering.
Candidates should have a good understanding of power semiconductors, their control, protection and application would be advantageous. Candidates should have experience on high power converter design and or power electronics device engineering It is key that the candidate has the ability to work quickly and efficiently within an engineering team.
An enquiring mind and desire to learn new skills, an ability to apply different engineering disciplines and a willingness to share the knowledge are essential qualities. Ideally, the candidate will have a good track record of leading a team of engineers in delivering a technical project on time and according to the scope.
Qualifications/Requirements:
Educated to degree level in electrical or power electronic engineering
Required Characteristics:
Experience for power electronic converters (such as high power motor drives, HVDC and FACTS applications)
Experience on high power electronic components (IGBTs, thyristors, passive components)
Experience on testing and validation of power electronic device

GE Vernova is a purpose-built energy technology company on a mission to electrify to thrive and decarbonize the world.
It is made up of three businesses -- Power, Wind, and Electrification -- with focus on accelerating the path to more reliable, affordable, and sustainable energy, while helping our customers power economies and deliver the electricity that is vital to health, safety, security, and improved quality of life.
The world needs more energy, smarter energy. With energy demand expected to grow by more than 50% in the next 20 years, we are continuously innovating to meet the moment…like we have for the past 130 years. The Energy of Change and relentless optimism are what drive us – it’s about never giving up and seeing what’s possible so that we deliver the energy technologies the world needs right now and for generations to come.
GE Vernova’s attitude and edge is embedded in its name. We retain our treasured legacy, “GE,” as an enduring and hard-earned badge of quality and ingenuity. “Ver” / “verde” signal Earth’s verdant and lush ecosystems. “Nova,” from the Latin “novus,” nods to a new, innovative era of lower carbon energy that GE Vernova will help deliver.
Together, we have the energy to change the world.
