Job Description

Position Responsibilities:

  • Maintains a safe workplace program and ensures that safety is the highest priority in the workplace.

  • Complies withall ASC Environmental, Safety and Health (ESH), Waste Management and Quality Assurance requirements, goals,policiesand procedures. Provides documentation to these divisions as necessary to ensure adequate and legaldocumentation.

  • Be responsible forsupervising the operation, preventive maintenance and repair of the main power plant generators, backup emergency generators, on-site high voltage switchgear systems, sea water desalinization and treatment system and the activated sludgewastewatertreatment plant.

  • Initiate and close work orders,establishpriorities and delegate assigned tasks.

  • Willingness to carry a radio or pager for after hour’s callout’s

  • Completes maintenance records and documents all maintenance performed andmaintainsoperating logbooks and databases asrequired

  • Ensure, to the best possible standards, uninterruptedmediumvoltage electrical service, water supply, and proper operation of thewastewatertreatment plant through planning, scheduling, materials take-offs, executing maintenance and supervision of plant operations.

  • Assures expedient response to unplanned power outages.

  • Advises the Utilities Supervisor of the status of power production equipment and systems.

  • Keep theon-iceFacility Engineer advised of the status of power generating, water production andwastewatertreatment equipment and systems.

  • Coordinate with theon-iceFacility Engineer on issues concerning power generation, waterproductionandwastewaterplant operation.

  • Coordinates with the Utilities Supervisor to order repair and/or spare parts, maintenance parts, assemblies,toolsand consumables.

  • Maintain inventory to at least 95% accuracy.

  • Supports the achievement of ASC metrics, whether metrics are directly or indirectly affected by this position’s work activities.

  • Providesappropriate safetytraining to employees and documents the training.

  • AssistUtilities Supervisorin creating andmonitoringannual budgets.

  • Recruit and recommendpersonnel. 

  • Monitor employee performance.

  • Evaluates job hazards and communicates information to staff verbally and in writing through various venues, including weekly and/or daily crew meetings.

  • Interprets project taskingutilizingdesign drawings,specificationsand diagrams.

  • Handles confidential matters (personnel actions, management reports, etc.)in accordance withmanagement policy and with the highest degree of professionalism.

  • Communicates professionally, both orally and in writing, with their subordinates as needed to relay information they needin order tobe successful in their jobs. This includes, but is not limited to, staff meetings, performance appraisals, job requirements, division metrics, projects, Quality Standard Procedures, and safety practices.

  • May berequiredto work outside on various jobsites in extremecold weatherand environmentally challenging conditions.

  • Interacts with other partner companies, the National Science Foundation,militaryand other agency officials, both over the telephone and in person. Is kind, courteous,cooperativeand professionalat all times

  • Participate in dormitory chores while deployed to Antarctica.

  • Performs other duties asrequired

RequiredEducation, Experience, Certificates and Licenses

  • BA/BSrequiredEquivalent relevant experience may be accepted in lieu of a degree.

  • Minimum two(2)years supervisory experience in operation and maintenance of diesel engine power plants isrequired

ExpectedSkills and Competencies:

  • Mechanical aptitude with the ability to handle multiple tasks at once isrequired  

  • Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices applied in the maintenance and repair of diesel electric generating equipment isrequired

  • Thorough knowledge of the methods, hazards, and safety precautions related to diesel engines and diesel engine driven electric generators isrequired

  • Ability tomaintaina professional attitude and to work efficiently in a stressful environment isrequired

  • Working comprehension of electrical distribution, controlpanelsand medium voltage switchgear.

  • Intermediate skill level with Microsoft Word, Outlook and Excel isrequired, high skill level is preferred.

Preferred

  • Previousexperience with remote Polar Logistics operations is preferred.

  • Experience with desalinization plants and associated equipment, or wastewater treatment plants is preferred.

  • State issued licenses in water plants and/or wastewater treatment plants is preferred.

Physical and/or Other Requirements

  • Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods

  • Successful completion of Medical and Dental examinations required by the NSF for deployment to Antarctica

  • Successful completion of drug screening and background check required by employer

  • Successful completion of Federal Background Check required by the NSF

  • Must be willing and able to lift and move items, parts, assemblies, and equipment up to the safety regulation maximum as required by the position.

  • Must be willing and able to perform physical activities including heavy lifting, climbing in and out of equipment, crawling, and working outdoors in extreme cold as required by the position.

  • Mustparticipatein community programs, such as “house-mouse” (chores), “daisy-picking” (cleaning-up around the station), recycling efforts & safetyobjectives

  • Valid Driver’s License issued in the United States

  • Must be able to obtain andmaintainfacility credentials/authorization. Note: US Citizenship isrequiredfor facility credentials/authorization at this work location
