He angitūtanga: The opportunity

This is a unique opportunity to be involved in supporting a rangatahi Māori-led response to climate change. This ground-breaking project will challenge the way Te Kaunihera o Tāmaki Makaurau delivers on climate action and Māori outcomes.

You will work alongside Māori specialists to support the kāhui of rangatahi Māori to develop practical environmental projects. Your team will manage a dedicated budget for Māori-led climate action to deliver on rangatahi priorities including restoring te mauri o te wai, connecting to whenua, promoting indigenous food sovereignty, and observing ngā tohu o te taiao.

What you can expect to work on includes:

  • Supporting with the organisation and facilitation of wānanga and other events to provide opportunities for the rangatahi to develop their own mātauranga and passion for te taiao.
  • Working with rangatahi to develop projects that are grounded in matauranga Māori and will reconnect them with whenua and wai to restore te taiao
  • Liaising with staff across Auckland Council in departments such as Environmental Services and Healthy Waters, to get their technical advice and support for delivery of rangatahi led projects
  • Supporting development of the programme and recruitment of the kāhui by your wider team
  • Assist with administrative and reporting requirements
  • Engagement with mana whenua and mātāwaka to build strong relationships to help support and guide the kaupapa

This role will have the unique opportunity to develop a climate programme that is driven by mātauranga Māori and mana whenua knowledge.

He kōrero mōu: About you

Your energy, enthusiasm and experience working with Māori and ideally rangatahi will enable you to provide support and guidance to the Education and Community Climate Action team on development of the rangatahi programme.

Skills we are looking for include:

  • Strong relationship building skills and expertise in Māori and/or rangatahi engagement and capacity building.
  • Proven experience in working with rangatahi māori in a tuākana, youth development, kaiako role or similar.
  • Experience in delivering initiatives that benefit te taiao.
  • Understanding of mātauranga Māori and te reo Māori
  • Ability to create and manage budgets and deliver operational projects.
  • A current and full NZ Driver’s license
