Job Description

The Institute for Systemic Inflammation Research ( ISEF) at the University of Lübeck ( UzL), in close collaboration with the University Hospital Schleswig-Holstein ( UKSH), investigates cellular and molecular mechanisms of dysregulated immune responses in chronic inflammatory diseases. Through direct access to patient cohorts and close interaction with clinical partners, the overarching aim is to translate basic discoveries into diagnostic and therapeutic approaches.

Within this framework, the newly established research group of Prof. Dr. Patrick Maschmeyer invites applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher (m/f/d) at the intersection of immunology and computational biology. The position is available as soon as possible. The initial appointment is for 2 years, with the possibility of extension up to five years

The project focuses on immune dysregulation in chronic inflammatory diseases using integrated experimental and computational approaches. The postdoctoral researcher will generate and analyze high-dimensional datasets from patient cohorts and pre-clinical models, including single-cell multi-omics data (e.g., scRNA-seq, scATAC-seq), spectral flow cytometry, and functional immunological assays. A particular emphasis is placed on mitochondrial DNA mutations at single-cell resolution and their role in immunometabolism, immune cell states, and inflammatory disease mechanisms. Data-driven approaches will be applied for biomarker discovery, patient stratification, and disease risk prediction.

What we offer

  • The salary will be based on the German E 13 TV-L scale, if terms and conditions under collective bargaining law are fulfilled.
  • A full-time employment, currently 38.5 hours/week; a part-time employment may be possible within the framework of certain working time models.
  • Access to cutting-edge technologies, advanced analytical frameworks, and patient-derived datasets.
  • You are welcome to inform yourself about our benefits under: Benefits (uksh.de)

Your responsibilities

  • Conducting ambitious research at the interface of basic and clinical immunology, computational biology, and AI.
  • Developing and leading independent research projects within a supportive and intellectually stimulating research environment that fosters regular scientific exchange.
  • Supervising students and actively establishing collaborations within an international and interdisciplinary research network.
  • Contributing to applications for external funding and, if desired, initiating and leading independent third-party funding applications.
  • Opportunities for participation in university teaching can be provided upon interest.

Your Profile

  • A PhD in immunology, computational biology, bioinformatics, or a related biomedical field.
  • Demonstrated expertise in experimental immunology and/or high-dimensional omics data analysis.
  • We welcome candidates with wet-lab and/or computational expertise, especially those interested in integrating both. Experience with AI/ML in biomedical data analysis is a plus.
  • A structured, independent, and solution-oriented working style with excellent communication skills and proficiency in English (written and spoken).
  • Enthusiasm for collaborative, interdisciplinary research in an international environment.

Applications from women and from candidates with disabilities are strongly encouraged and will be given preference in cases of equal qualifications.

Interested candidates should submit a single PDF including a motivation letter, CV, list of publications, certificates, and contact details of at least two referees.
