Job Description

The Beyond Center for Fundamental Concepts in Science (http://beyond.asu.edu) at Arizona State University invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Scholar position in the laboratory of PI Sara Walker (http://emergence.asu.edu/). We seek an ambitious scientist with expertise in bioinformatics, the biochemistry of early life, evolutionary biology, or a related field, who is eager to develop entirely new approaches to reconstructing evolutionary history that predates the Last Universal Common Ancestor (LUCA). The anticipated start date for the position is December 1, 2026; however, the start date is flexible.

The Walker lab works at the intersection of theory and data science with the goal of identifying the ‘laws of life’s universal principles that will help us understand the nature of living systems, solve the origin of life, and detect life on other worlds. A central aim of this position is to ask how the chemical record preserved in the composition and architecture of modern cells might be read as a record of the deep evolutionary past — the era before LUCA that conventional sequence-based phylogenetics cannot reach.

The successful candidate will help develop novel methods and hypotheses that leverage recent advances in assembly theory to interpret molecular and cellular complexity as evidence of evolutionary history, extending the reach of evolutionary reconstruction to the very earliest stages of life’s emergence. This is an opportunity to invent methodology rather than apply it, and to help open a new empirical window onto pre-LUCA evolution.

The ideal candidate brings deep expertise in established evolutionary biology and phylogenetic methods yet is genuinely motivated by open questions at the origins of life and is brave and creative enough to move beyond established techniques toward entirely new frameworks. We especially welcome applicants who see the reconstruction of pre-LUCA evolution not as a settled problem but as fertile ground for building fundamentally new approaches.

Qualifications

Essential Functions:

  • Develop novel computational, theoretical, and/or comparative approaches to reconstruct evolutionary history prior to the Last Universal Common Ancestor (LUCA).
  • Analyze molecular, biochemical, cellular, and/or comparative-genomic data to identify signatures of early evolutionary processes and constraints.
  • Apply and help refine assembly theory and related quantitative frameworks for interpreting molecular and cellular complexity as evidence of evolutionary history.
  • Formulate testable hypotheses about the origins of life, pre-LUCA evolution, and the emergence of biological organization.
  • Develop, document, and maintain reproducible computational workflows, datasets, code, and analysis pipelines.
  • Conduct interdisciplinary research at the intersection of evolutionary biology, bioinformatics, biochemistry, astrobiology, physics, data science, and complexity theory.
  • Work collaboratively with members of the Walker lab, The Beyond Center, and related interdisciplinary research teams.
  • Prepare and contribute to peer-reviewed publications, conference presentations, technical reports, and grant proposals.
  • Present research findings in lab meetings, seminars, conferences, and collaborative project discussions.
  • Maintain detailed research records and documentation consistent with project goals and responsible research practices.
  • Mentor or collaborate with graduate and undergraduate students as appropriate.
  • Manage time, milestones, and research priorities effectively in a creative, exploratory research environment.

Required Qualifications:

  • A PhD (completed by the time of appointment) in bioinformatics, biochemistry, evolutionary biology, computational biology, chemistry, astrobiology, or a closely related field.
  • Demonstrated expertise in phylogenetic, comparative-genomic, or related molecular-evolution methods.
  • Strong computational, quantitative, and data-analysis skills, including scientific programming.
  • Evidence of scientific creativity, independence, and the ambition to pursue high-risk, high-reward questions and unconventional hypotheses.
  • A record of peer-reviewed publication commensurate with career stage, and strong scientific writing and communication skills.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience developing or adapting computational methods for evolutionary reconstruction, phylogenetics, comparative genomics, molecular evolution, systems biology, or related areas.
  • A serious interest in the origins of life, assembly theory, and theoretical or physics-based approaches to biology — prior work in these areas is welcome but not required.
  • Familiarity with origins-of-life research, astrobiology, assembly theory, complexity science, theoretical biology, or physics-based approaches to living systems.
  • Experience working with biochemical, genomic, proteomic, metabolic, structural, or other molecular/cellular datasets.
  • Strong scientific programming skills and experience with reproducible research practices, such as version control, workflow documentation, or open-source code development.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently while contributing effectively to interdisciplinary teams.
  • Demonstrated creative problem-solving skills and interest in developing new conceptual or methodological frameworks.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills for interdisciplinary scientific audiences.
  • Demonstrated commitment to working with faculty, staff, students, and communities to advance the principles of the ASU Charter.
