This position is for a postdoctoral research associate in the Ocean Process Analysis Laboratory. The postdoc will be supervised by Kai Ziervogel. They will conduct experimental work related to the NSF funded research project ‘Nutrient-mediated interactions between plastic-derived DOC and the biological carbon pump’. Experimental work includes bioassays with natural microbial communities from the Gulf of Maine and with cultured bacteria to assess microbial utilization of plastic leachates and associated cycling of growth-limiting nutrients. The experiments will be conducted under controlled conditions in replicate 1-L glass bottles incubated in an environmental chamber in the laboratory. Analytical work will include bacterial cell counts in a flow cytometer, hydrolytic enzyme activity measurements, and nutrient analysis. The postdoc will also be responsible for data analysis and publication.
Duties/Responsibilities
Category 1 (60%)
Plan and conduct laboratory experiments with natural microbial assemblages from the Gulf of Maine and with cultured bacteria to assess rates of microbial transformation of plastic leachates.
Category 2 (30%)
Data analysis from the experiments
Category 3 (10%)
Data publication; prepare peer-reviewed article.
Requirements
Minimum Acceptable Education & Experience:
The position requires a PhD in oceanography, and experience in conducting measurements of hydrolytic enzyme activities and bacterial cell abundance.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
The postdoc should have knowledge and experience in planning and conducting bioassay experiments with plastic leachates using natural microbial assemblages. The candidate should also have experience with bacterial culture work using aseptic culturing techniques. The postdoc will also work with undergraduate students who will assist with the laboratory work.

Compensation Pay Range
$66,000.00/Annual
This is a Fiscal Year position (26 pay periods)
