Title Postdoctoral Fellow - Nephrology Specific Title Appointment Type Postdoctoral Fellow Department IUSM - Medicine - Nephrology Campus IU School of Medicine Indianapolis Position Summary

The Division of Nephrology at Indiana University School of Medicine is seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Fellow to join a multidisciplinary research program investigating the biology of uromodulin (UMOD), thick ascending limb (TAL) epithelial cells, and their roles in kidney injury and kidney stone disease.

Our laboratory studies fundamental mechanisms regulating UMOD biology, including its intracellular trafficking, processing, secretion, alternative splicing, and cellular functions during kidney injury and repair. A major focus of the laboratory is understanding how alterations in UMOD biology influence TAL cell function, mitochondrial metabolism, acute kidney injury (AKI), progression from AKI to chronic kidney disease, and nephrolithiasis.

Current projects include:

  • Defining the molecular mechanisms regulating UMOD trafficking, intracellular processing, and secretion in TAL cells.
  • Investigating alternative splicing of UMOD, including injury-induced UMOD isoforms with distinct intracellular localization and functions.
  • Determining how UMOD regulates mitochondrial metabolism and cellular adaptation to kidney injury.
  • Investigating mechanisms linking UMOD to kidney stone formation and nephrolithiasis.
  • Developing therapeutic approaches that manipulate UMOD biology, including splice-modifying strategies.
  • Integrating molecular and cell biology with animal models, advanced imaging, spatial biology, and human kidney tissue studies.

The successful candidate will work closely with investigators with expertise in UMOD biology, renal physiology, kidney injury, animal models, spatial biology, and advanced imaging. The fellow will have opportunities to develop an increasingly independent research program, present work at national and international meetings, publish high-impact studies, participate in grant development, and receive structured mentoring toward an independent scientific career.

The position is particularly well suited for an investigator interested in the intersection of cell biology, epithelial trafficking, RNA biology, mitochondrial biology, renal physiology, and kidney disease.

Research and Career Development Environment

The fellow will join a collaborative kidney research environment at Indiana University School of Medicine with access to expertise and infrastructure in renal physiology, molecular and cellular biology, animal models of kidney disease, advanced microscopy, spatial transcriptomics, spatial proteomics, and translational human kidney research.

An important objective of the position is career development toward scientific independence. The fellow will be encouraged to develop independent hypotheses within the broader research program, lead manuscripts, present at national and international meetings, participate in grant writing, and develop an independent scientific niche over the course of the fellowship.

The Division’s research activities are led by world-renowned faculty members developing innovative protocols and driving the standard of care for diseases related to Nephrology.

The search committee will begin evaluating applications as they are received and applications will continue to be reviewed until positions are filled.
