Located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the Versiti Blood Research Institute (VBRI) is the largest blood-focused research institute in the United States. With over 30 basic, translational, and clinical investigators, the institute is dedicated to advancing scientific knowledge and developing innovative therapies related to blood and blood disorders. The institute's research interests encompass a wide range of topics, including transfusion medicine, cellular therapy, thrombosis/hemostasis, immunology, and hematologic malignancies. As a vital part of Versiti, a non-profit organization with a blood bank at its core, the VBRI strives to improve lives through innovative research and the development of novel diagnostics and treatments.
VBRI is part of the Milwaukee Regional Medical Campus, a rapidly growing clinical-translational research hub. VBRI’s proximity to the Medical College of Wisconsin, Childrens’ Hospital of Wisconsin, and Froedtert Hospital facilitates seamless interdisciplinary collaborations. A range of exemplary core facilities support highly competitive research. In the summer of 2024, construction of a new research building began, doubling existing VBRI research space to enable the recruitment of 10-15 new faculty. With its renowned researchers, strategic expansion plans and location in a highly collaborative environment, the VBRI is poised to maintain and expand its position as one of the leading hematology institutes in the world.
Under the direction of a Principal Investigator, further develops and expands understanding of scientific theory in his/her area of interest. Incumbent also learns and applies scientific laboratory techniques and gains experience in other areas of research that will lead to increased probability of success as an independent scientist. This is a training position with an expected duration of 1 – 3 years.
The Jarjour laboratory at Versiti Blood Research Institute is recruiting a postdoctoral fellow. This position will be supported by a pending major award and has an expected duration of 2-4 years, dependent on workload and individual performance. Our group focuses on tissue-resident immunity, which supports organ homeostasis and acts as a first line of defense against pathogens, tumors, and other dangers. Remarkably, resident leukocytes are locally maintained independent of the circulating immune system, allowing them to become uniquely adapted to their home tissue and positioning them as key players in organ homeostasis. We seek to understand how resident immunity is maintained and how it evolves throughout life to enable new therapeutic interventions in human disease. Our lab is collaborative and founded on respect, empowering every person to achieve their goals and to embrace curiosity as we explore the immune system.
The successful candidate will lead projects unraveling the mechanisms supporting self-renewal of tissue-resident memory CD8 T cells. They will be expected to develop projects and take intellectual ownership, while working closely with Dr. Jarjour. They will also act as a mentor to junior members of the laboratory. The successful candidate will receive mentoring and training to support their career development and prepare them for independence. They will be encouraged to write fellowship and transition award applications with support from Dr. Jarjour.

Versiti was founded with the belief that together, our blood centers can better serve people’s urgent need for life-saving healthcare. That we can strengthen and restore the health of our communities while conducting groundbreaking research. That we can integrate scientific innovation, medicine, and service in ways that no other blood health organization can match.
We’re driven by the urgency of our work and inspired by the generosity of the people we rely on for life-saving donations. We have the privilege to safeguard these gifts and ensure they go where the need is greatest, in our communities and beyond––and our hospital and healthcare partners across the nation rely on the speed, safety, and availability of these gifts.
Our people are driven by a relentless curiosity. As the home of the world-renowned Blood Research Institute, we attract leading blood health researchers from around the world who are passionate about advancing personalized medicine. We conduct focused research in areas like cellular therapies, oncology, and genomics, to make a difference in the lives of people through the healing potential of blood.
People need people.
There is no substitute for blood, organs, tissue, or bone marrow. They are precious. They are perishable. And the need for them is vital.
As a partnership of blood centers, we’re far stronger together than we are alone. Ultimately, the meaning of our work is found in the lives we save and the people we serve. Our dedication to service and safety will enable us to become the partner of choice for hospitals everywhere.
Our commitment to scientific rigor can save lives and advance the field of personalized medicine. And our commitment to building deep relationships with our donors will transform Versiti into a beacon of hope, care, and innovation in the communities we call home.
