
The Department of Sociology and the Center on Health, Risk and Society (CHRS) in the College of Arts and Sciences at American University invite applications for a Postdoctoral Associate appointment beginning January 2015. The appointment is a 2 year term position.
Applicants should hold a PhD or other terminal degree. The postdoctoral associate will be part of the department and Center’s emphasis on the social dimensions of health and should build on at least one of our current strengths at CHRS. Of particular interest are candidates whose research speaks to processes of displacement and disruption, including neighborhood change/”gentrification,” and/or incarceration/re-entry and policing, and / or immigration/ deportation. Other areas of interest in the department and center include: health across the life course, social inequality and health (health disparities), health governance and politics, and social determinants of and structural interventions to address health. Areas of methodological and analytical expertise are open (e.g. mixed methods, survey research, secondary data analysis, qualitative data analysis, time series, agent-based modeling, multivariate analysis, social networks, multi-level, etc.). The postdoc will be expected to participate in a weekly seminar run by CHRS and monthly research meetings, and will have numerous opportunities to collaborate with faculty in the department and/or affiliated with CHRS. Other opportunities will depend on experience and interest, but may include grant-writing, participating in organizing CHRS/department speakers series, and contributing to cross disciplinary initiatives such as with the School of Public Administration’s Metropolitan Policy Center.
