Job Description

The Computational Protein Engineering (CPE) group at The Novo Nordisk Foundation Biotechnology Research Institute for the Green Transition (BRIGHT) is developing novel methods to engineer proteins more effectively using state-of-the-art experimental and computational approaches. Our mission is to develop innovative and sustainable solutions to the most pressing issues facing our societies in terms of bioproduction and bioremediation. To support this goal, we are looking for a colleague who is independent, who thrives within an interdisciplinary environment at a world-class research centre, and who is highly motivated to move the area of enzyme engineering to the next level, while having a positive impact on our world. When joining our team, you get the opportunity to use the latest algorithms in machine learning for improving enzyme activity, selectivity, and/or stability, etc. We currently work with enzymes involved in the biosynthesis of natural products and biochemicals as well as in the breakdown of greenhouse gases including CO2 and CH4.

Responsibilities and qualifications

Responsibilities:

  • Develop novel workflows for the high-throughput generation of data on enzyme kinetics
  • Engineer multiple enzyme properties using experimental and computational methods
  • Variant identification using next generation sequencing (e.g., Nanopore)
  • Protein expression, purification and characterization using biochemical and biophysical assays
  • Develop epistasis-aware AI models for protein engineering with computational experts
  • Report your results in peer-review scientific publications and international conferences
  • Teach and supervise PhD, MSc and BSc students as well as research assistants

Qualifications:

  • PhD in chemical engineering and applied chemistry
  • Experience with biocatalysis, protein engineering and chemical engineering
  • Experience with kinetic modelling, protein and process engineering of dehydrogenases
  • Strong publication record of peer-review original scientific articles
  • Excellent English proficiency in written and oral form
  • Excellent communication and social skills for working within an interdisciplinary research team
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to work independently

As a formal qualification, you must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent).

About BRIGHT – The Novo Nordisk Foundation Biotechnology Research Institute for the Green Transition
The Novo Nordisk Foundation Biotechnology Research Institute for the Green Transition (BRIGHT) is a major initiative based at DTU that aims to accelerate the development of biosolutions and strengthen the bio-based economy. BRIGHT serves as a hub for academic and industrial partners working together to unlock the potential of bioproduction. BRIGHT focuses on three main areas: Sustainable materials (Developing bio-based alternatives to fossil-derived materials), Microbial foods (Innovating food production through microbial technologies), and Microorganisms for net-zero agriculture (Creating solutions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in agriculture). The goal is to develop and scale innovative biosolutions within these areas, ultimately creating sustainable and competitive alternatives to fossil-based products and processes that can make significant contributions to reducing global greenhouse gas emissions.
