POSTDOCTORAL ASSOCIATE

New York University Tandon School of Engineering

The Center for Urban Science and Progress at NYU Tandon School of Engineering is seeking to hire a Post Doctoral Associate to work in in theDynamical Systems Laboratory (DSL)

The DSL was established twenty years ago by Prof. Maurizio Porfiri (Institute Professor at Tandon School of Engineering, Director of Tandon’s Center for Urban Science and Progress, and Director of the NYU Urban Institute). The DSL is home to a highly collaborative, vibrant group of young scholars, with complementary expertise across theory, experiments, and computations. The director, Prof. Porfiri, is the author of more than 450 journal publications, including papers in Nature, Nature Human Behavior, Nature Cities, Nature Communications, PNAS, PRL, and PRX Life, and the recipient of numerous professional awards, including the elevation of the European Academy of Sciences(Wikipedia/Maurizio_Porfiri).

Responsibilities

Candidates will be responsible for making important contributions to one or multiple research projects supported by our several ongoing grants(see DSL: Active Projects).Our research has multiple threads: urban science (e.g., data center siting in cities, vacancy patterns due to climate risks, and causes of firearm-related harm), collective behavior (e.g., navigation patterns of visually impaired persons in crowds, metabolism of ant colonies, and slime-mold inspired self-assembling), and network science (e.g., causal inference from urban data and control-theoretic approaches).

Salary range

In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary for this position is $65,000depending on the candidate’s experience and qualification.

Qualifications

Candidates should have a PhD in physics, biology, engineering, mathematics, computational science, or a related field. We welcome applicants with recent PhDs and individuals seeking additional postdoctoral training. Candidates will be required to present eligibility to work in the United States.

The successful candidate will have a demonstrated background in mathematical modeling, data science, and/or experimental methods. Ideal candidates should have a demonstrated interest in working on interdisciplinary research topics, bringing technical depth to a collaborative, multi-disciplinary environment as exemplified by a strong publication record.

Previous experience in interdisciplinary, high-impact research is desired
