Job Description

The Department of Astronomy at the University of Michigan invites applications for two HURON (High-redshift Universe Research and Observation in New Generations) postdoctoral scholars to work with Prof. Jinyi Yang and/or Dr. Feige Wang in one or more areas related to high-redshift galaxies, AGNs, SMBHs, protoclusters, cosmic reionization, and time domain astronomy. Prof. Yang and Dr. Wang are leading several JWST and Roman programs, as well as extensive multi-wavelength follow-up programs. Their teams are also expanding their research horizons by jointly exploring large surveys conducted with Euclid, Rubin, and Roman. Successful applicants will participate in data reduction and scientific analysis for projects using data from these programs. They are also encouraged to conduct independent research in consultation with their mentors. Applicants with prior experience in JWST and ALMA data analysis, optical/IR imaging and spectroscopic data reduction, or data mining are strongly encouraged to apply.

Successful applicants will have access to departmental facilities such as the Magellan telescopes, the MDM Observatories, high-performance computing clusters, and other facilities (http://www.lsa.umich.edu/astro/). The Department of Astronomy has invested in the ESO ELT instrumentation program and are members of consortia building METIS, HARMONI, ANDES, and MOSAIC. Prof. Yang and Dr. Wang are full members of the Euclid Consortium, members of the LSST AGN Science Collaboration, and participants in two Roman Cycle 1 GAS programs. Prof. Yang is also the PI of a high-z quasar survey with DESI.

The initial appointment as a Research Fellow is for one year with the possibility of renewal for up to two additional years, contingent upon satisfactory performance, availability of work and the availability of funding. The exact start date is negotiable.
