The Talkowski Laboratory in the Center for Genomic Medicine (CGM) at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), Harvard Medical School, and the Broad Institute is seeking exceptional postdoctoral candidates in computational biology, bioinformatics, and/or statistical genetics. Candidates would contribute to collaborative research initiatives aimed at discovering genomic variation and determining its functional impact in developmental anomalies and neuropsychiatric disorders.

Highly qualified candidates would oversee a long-read genome sequencing (lrGS) project, which aims to leverage technical advances, innovative methods, and transformative lrGS initiatives to develop a population reference database for long-read genomes (gnomAD-LR). Our goal is to enable broader lrGS adoption and improved variant interpretation, disease gene discovery, and association studies.

The candidate will be appointed as a Research Fellow at Massachusetts General Hospital, a Post-Doc at Harvard Medical School, and an Associate Scientist at the Broad Institute. Candidates will also require excellent interpersonal skills to work in a highly collaborative environment across institutions.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Postdoctoral Fellow will have the opportunity to work in a unique translational genomics environment within the CGM, which seeks to integrate computational genomics, technology development, and molecular genomics methods. At the Broad Institute, these collaborative projects span the Stanley Center for Psychiatric Research, the Program in Medical and Population Genetics, and the Data Sciences Platform. Candidates will have the opportunity to analyze large-scale genome sequencing datasets of millions of individuals over the next several years and contribute substantially to cutting-edge research initiatives.

The Postdoctoral Fellow will be based at MGH under the guidance and primary mentorship of Dr. Michael. Talkowski.

Qualifications

SKILLS & COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:

The ideal candidate should have received (or expect to receive soon) a Ph.D. in human genetics, quantitative genetics, computational biology, bioinformatics, computer science, physics, or mathematics. Competitive candidates will have a strong background in human genetics, statistical genetics, and/or computational biology, and prior exposure to genome and transcriptome sequencing datasets. C andidates will need excellent interpersonal skills to work in a highly collaborative team science environment across institutions.

  • First (or co-first) author of one or more peer-reviewed scientific publications
  • Outstanding recommendations from prior research supervisors
  • Excellent English verbal and written communication skills
  • Able to work both independently and collaboratively
  • Experience with commonly used bioinformatics tools and databases
  • Programming skills (e.g., R, Python, C++, etc.)
  • Advanced knowledge of statistical methods
  • Expertise in analyzing next-generation sequencing data
  • Ability to thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced setting with multiple overlapping and shifting objectives
