Overall Responsibilities and Key Accountabilities:

Business Operations

  • Assist in recruiting, coaching and performance management of the team (approximately 30 people).
  • Active in business development.
  • Identifying client leads.
  • Following up with potential and existing clients for work.
  • Leading and assisting in the preparation of proposals.
  • Participate in budgeting activities and manage operations within the approved budget.
  • Ensure discipline technical work and team activities meet all health, safety, environmental, and security requirements.

Team Leadership and Development

  • Oversee programs for technical competency and quality and monitor technical competency of teams.
  • Advise on all technical aspects of marine structural engineering work, such as development of design criteria, preparation of engineering calculations, analyses, and studies, development of layout design, and report writing.
  • Review, confirm and assign appropriate staff to ensure engineering deliverables are complete, technically accurate, and in compliance with applicable codes, standards, and specifications.
  • Ensure team member adherence to company processes, generally accepted engineering and design practices, regulatory requirements, and customer specifications.
  • Provide feedback to the team through regular check-ins and scheduled performance evaluations. Work with personnel within the team on an action plan for growth and development.
  • Promote safety of design and safety within the workplace.
  • Reduce project costs by constantly exploring new approaches, developing creative solutions, making more effective designs and improving implementation
  • Work with Project Managers to stay within project budgets.

Qualifications

  • The ideal candidate will have a degree in civil/structural engineering from an accredited post-secondary institution.
  • Registered or eligibility for registration with Engineers and Geoscientists British Columbia as a professional engineer.

Additional information:

  • 15+ years of relevant discipline experience and 5+ years in project/team leadership
  • Strong background in ports and marine civil/structural work. Experienced understanding of regulations, codes, and industry standard practices
  • Experience leading a team, including recruitment, mentoring, coaching and performance management.
  • Demonstrated experience in building and maintaining strong client relations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and to proactively respond to time-sensitive issues.
  • Maintains strong relationships and works well with clients and contractors, establishes and maintains trust.
  • Skilled in estimating project costs and proposal writing. Adept at budgeting and cost control.
  • Experience in project management, risk management, quality, procurement, or construction execution.
  • Works with self-initiated interaction with senior level management and self-initiated technical guidance. Receives administrative direction based on organizational policies and objectives.
  • Effectively communicates and presents complex proposals and reports to senior level management and clients. Ability to persuade and influence others. Participative management style with a cooperative team approach.
  • Act as a role-model and demonstrate a commitment to safety, personal well-being and a pro-active approach to continuously improving health, safety and environmental performance. Assumes hands-on management and implementation of all relevant company HSE requirements.
