Job Description

Summary

The Portfolio Manager is a cross-functional, horizontal role responsible for strategic alignment, governance, and portfolio management across all Product Lines and Solution Lines in the Business Unit.

The role ensures that portfolio priorities, product strategies, and solution visions support the Business Unit strategy, while respecting the ownership of individual Product and Solution Lines. By connecting teams and coordinating portfolio-wide decisions, the Portfolio Manager prevents silos and ensures consistency.

You will also own the Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) framework and coordinate the annual Capital Resource Allocation (CRA) process. You will manage portfolio-level risks and dependencies and supports investment decisions based on strategic value, growth potential, profitability and ROI.

The position requires strong strategic thinking, governance skills, and the ability to influence stakeholders across the Business Unit without direct ownership of individual Product or Solution Lines.

Responsibilities

Portfolio Strategy & Alignment

  • Align Product and Solution Line strategies with the Business Unit strategy, priorities, and objectives.
  • Provide a cross-portfolio perspective on priorities, opportunities, dependencies, and risks.
  • Facilitate collaboration across Product and Solution Lines to prevent silos and ensure a coherent direction.
  • Coordinate portfolio-wide decisions that span multiple lines.
  • Identify cross-portfolio dependencies, conflicts, gaps, and opportunities and resolve them with stakeholders.
  • Support Business Unit leadership with portfolio-level insights and recommendations.

Portfolio Governance & Cross-Functional Requirements

  • Ensure Business Unit-wide requirements are interpreted and implemented consistently across the portfolio.
  • Work with Product Managers and stakeholders to incorporate regulatory, security, privacy, resilience, architecture, interoperability, and other cross-cutting requirements into planning.
  • Monitor implementation across lines and identify fragmentation, inconsistency, or risk.
  • Facilitate alignment between Product Managers and central or specialist functions.
  • Establish and maintain appropriate portfolio governance mechanisms, decision forums, and reporting.

Product Lifecycle Management (PLM)

  • Own and govern the PLM framework across all Product and Solution Lines.
  • Maintain common lifecycle stages, stage-gate reviews, entry and exit criteria, documentation standards, and decision frameworks.
  • Coordinate portfolio-level lifecycle decisions, including introductions, major enhancements, transitions, and retirements.
  • Proactively manage lifecycle risks, dependencies, and cross-portfolio impacts.
  • Monitor adherence to the framework and drive continuous improvement.
  • Provide portfolio-level visibility of lifecycle status, risks and decisions.

Capital Resource Allocation (CRA)

  • Coordinate the annual CRA process across the Business Unit.
  • Work with Product Managers, Finance, Commercial teams, and other stakeholders to build a consolidated view of investments and resource needs.
  • Facilitate comparative assessment of opportunities based on ROI, profitability, growth potential and strategic value.
  • Identify opportunities to rebalance investment and resources across lines.
  • Highlight underperforming or misaligned offerings and support rationalisation discussions.
  • Identify strategic growth areas where additional investment would create greater value.
  • Support leadership in making informed investment and prioritisation decisions.

Portfolio Performance & Continuous Improvement

  • Establish and maintain portfolio-level reporting, dashboards, and performance indicators.
  • Monitor portfolio health, strategic alignment, investment performance, lifecycle status, and key risks.
  • Drive continuous improvement of portfolio processes, frameworks, and tools.
  • Promote transparency, consistency, and fact-based decision-making.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Business, Management, Technology, Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Previous experience of 2-5 years on same/similar positions.
  • Relevant certification in Product Management, Portfolio Management, Project/Program Management, or Strategy is an advantage.
  • Experience in technology, telecommunications, digital, or other complex B2B environments are an advantage.
  • Experience working across multiple products, solutions, business units, or functions in a complex organisation.
  • Experience with product lifecycle management, portfolio governance, investment planning, or strategic planning is highly desirable.
  • Experience working with Finance and Commercial teams on investment, business cases, ROI, or resource allocation is an advantage.
  • Ability to analyse complex information and translate it into clear portfolio-level insights and recommendations.
  • Excellent collaboration and communication skills across business, product, technology, finance, commercial, and other functions.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, dependencies, and competing interests across a complex portfolio.
  • Strong facilitation and decision-making skills.
  • Strong organisational and project management skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with ambiguity and navigate complex organisational environments.
