Spire Cardiff Hospital is looking for an experienced and motivated Portering Team Lead to join our hardworking Facilities team. This is a key role within the hospital, supporting the smooth, safe, and efficient day‑to‑day running of services and helping us provide the highest standards of care for our patients.

About the Role

As a Portering Team Lead, you will provide vital support across the hospital, including the safe movement of patients, equipment and supplies. You will work leading a close-knit team, covering a range of shifts.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead on the coordination and maintenance of portering staff rotas, ensuring appropriate cover is in place at all times to support the safe and efficient running of portering services across the hospital.
  • Support the induction and training of new Portering team members, ensuring they understand and adhere to Spire Healthcare policies, procedures, and standards relevant to portering and wider hospital operations.
  • Communicate proactively with the Hospitality Manager regarding any incidents, risks, or service requirements within Portering Services, enabling issues to be identified and resolved promptly.
  • Provide a welcoming, professional, and courteous service when assisting patients and visitors, including offering directions and guidance around the hospital as required.
  • Support ward and reception teams by assisting with the safe transportation of patient belongings between wards and the main reception areas.
  • Escort patients between departments in line with clinical instructions, ensuring dignity, safety, and comfort at all times.
  • Transport pathology samples securely to relevant departments or sites as directed by clinical staff, in accordance with hospital procedures.
  • Assist with the movement and removal of furniture, equipment, and fittings within the hospital as required to support clinical and operational needs.
  • Contribute to maintaining the security of the hospital building and grounds, reporting any concerns appropriately.
  • Demonstrate a flexible and cooperative approach to working patterns and duties, maintaining a professional attitude at all times.

Who we're looking for:

Experience working as a Porter, ideally within a healthcare or customer‑focused environment

  • Previous experience leading or supervising a team, with the confidence to support and guide others
  • Strong communication and organisational skills, with the ability to prioritise tasks effectively
  • A high standard of customer care, with a friendly, professional, and approachable manner
  • Ability to work independently and use initiative when required
  • A caring and sympathetic approach, with a genuine commitment to supporting patients, visitors, and colleagues
  • Flexibility in approach to duties and working hours to meet the needs of the service
  • Physically able to carry out the essential duties of the role safely, including moving equipment and assisting with patient transportation
  • A full and valid UK driving licence
