NPL now has a vacancy for a qualified and experienced individual to join our Mine Technical Services Department as a Technician – Geotech Underground (241629)

About the role

Reporting to the Geotech Senior Engineer, the Geotech Technician will assist in the day-to-day supervision of the drainage maintenance, geotechnical instrument data collection, geotechnical instrument installation, and any other duties that require the input and action of a Geotech Technician.

Key Responsibilities

• Data collection from geotechnical instruments on site including piezometers, inclinometers, crack pins and Multipoint Borehole Extensometers (MPBX)
• Installation of geotechnical instruments and horizontal drainage holes on site
• Supervision of the field work related to drainage maintenance, slope rehabilitation, and any other geotechnical related work on site
• Undertake geotechnical testing in the laboratory and in the field to determine rock/soil/shotcrete strength and modulus properties, as well as ground support pull-out tests
• Assist the geotechnical engineers in preparation and collection of shotcrete samples for further laboratory testing
• Always adhere to safety protocols and procedures, including the proper handling of equipment, use of personal protective gear, and participation in safety training sessions
• Assist with the preparation and cleaning of work areas, ensuring they are kept clean, organized, and free from hazards
• Participate in training programs and skill development initiatives to enhance technical knowledge and proficiency
• Maintain a high level of health, safety and environmental awareness and comply with NPL Occupational Health, Safety and Environmental Policy and all related rules and procedures.

About You

To succeed in this role, the ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications and experiences:

• Completed Grade 12 as a minimum. A graduate from a technical college will be preferable
• Minimum of 3-5 years’ working experience in mine geotechnical work, preferably in PNG Highlands setting.
• Valid PNG National Driver’s License with over 2 years of driving experience.
• Experience in extractive industry preferred
• High level understanding of geotechnical instrumentation, mapping techniques and laboratory
• Competency in using MS Excel spread sheet and Word
• Good verbal and written communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively within a multidisciplinary team
• Ability to work unsupervised
• Willingness to adhere to safety regulations and protocols
• Ability to work effectively as part of a team and follow instructions from Supervisors
• Physically fit and able to work in different weather conditions
• Fluency in English and/or Tok Pisin.
• Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
• High level of motivation and sense of responsibility
• Willingness to undergo training and obtain relevant certifications as required

Mobilization Requirement

• All Applicants must have an up-to-date Police Clearance Certificate, acquired within the last 6 months
• Ability to successfully pass a pre- employment medical and drug and alcohol test
• Be a Local Porgeran (Cat 1a – SML, Cat 1b – LMP or Cat 2 – Other Porgera)
• Candidate available in the valley to start immediately
• The Roster Pattern is 14 days on and 7 days off
