Job Description

At Mahaska Health the Polysomnography Technologist is to be responsible for conducting overnight sleep studies and related procedures to diagnose and treat sleep disorders. This role involves patient preparation, monitoring, data collection, and scoring of sleep studies in accordance with established protocols and physician orders.

Essential job responsibilities include but are not limited to,
  • Prepare patients for sleep studies by applying electrodes and monitoring equipment
  • Conduct overnight polysomnographic recordings, including EEG, EOG, EMG, ECG, respiratory effort, oxygen saturation, and body movements
  • Explains the procedure to the patient and/or other appropriate individuals (i.e., family or guardians of children or individuals who might not be able to understand reason for test).
  • Educates patients with probable diagnosis and treatment options.
  • Monitor patient safety and comfort throughout the study
  • Recognize and respond to sleep-related events and implement interventions (e.g., CPAP titration)
  • Score and analyze sleep data using standardized criteria
  • Maintain accurate documentation and patient records
  • Clean, calibrate, and maintain sleep lab equipment
  • Communicate effectively with patients, physicians, and interdisciplinary teams
  • Recognize and respond appropriately to patient’s medical problems and physiological events, especially cardiac dysrhythmias, respiratory events, and seizures.
  • Ensure safety and welfare of all patients, including those patients with special needs.
  • Remains current in new advances in sleep medicine, including procedures, equipment, and legislation.
  • Proficient in properly titrating CPAP/Bi-level pressure management and advanced sleep disorder treatment procedures.
  • Follows protocol for the titration of oxygen.
Job Requirements include but are not limited to,
  • Associate’s or bachelor’s degree in Polysomnography, Respiratory Therapy, or related field
  • Certification as a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT) preferred
  • Prior training as a nurse, EEG technologist, respiratory care practitioner, pulmonary function technologist, or other allied health professional is preferred.
  • Membership in one or more professional associations related to sleep/wake technology is preferred: American Association of Sleep Technologists (AAST), American Society of Electroencephalographic Technologist (ASET), American Sleep Disorders Association (ASDA), or American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC).
  • Strong knowledge of sleep disorders and diagnostic procedures
  • Excellent interpersonal, observational, and technical skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a clinical setting
  • Primarily overnight shifts (8–12 hours)
  • May include weekends and holidays based on patient needs
  • Must adhere to all training requirements as mandated by Federal, State, and Professional licensure and regulatory standards.
