Responsible for patient population of 12 years old and up. This includes, but is not limited to, oxygen therapy, pulse
oximetry, other duties include proper documentation and using electronic documentation systems. Performs quality
Polysomnography studies for adolescent, adult and geriatric populations and prepares them to be sent to
Intermountain Sleep Disorder Center for scoring and interpretation. Educates patients, staff, community and
physicians in sleep and sleep disorders. Adheres to and practices the St. John's Health Corporate Compliance
Program and participates in Performance Improvement Activities.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Services
· Always obtains a requisition and checks the chart for complete physician orders before starting a procedure.
· Identifies self to patient and reassuringly informs patient about the procedure to be preformed.
· Always checks patient's identification before any procedure is performed.
· Informs the nursing station when a patient is being transported to the department and informs them when the
patient is returned. Informs ICU when a patient on telemetry is being transported to other areas of the hospital.
· Always thoroughly explains the procedure about to be performed in order to facilitate cooperation and alleviate
patient anxiety; addresses patient's concerns about the procedure.
· Insures that the patient is properly clothed and covered for the procedure; demonstrates respect for patient
modesty.
· Always washes hands before and after each patient contact; strictly obeys isolation and infection control
procedures.
· Demonstrates an ability to participate in the departmental and hospital procedure for "Code Blue," fire and disaster
plan.
· Demonstrates competence in all procedures required for all age groups in accordance with the policies and
procedures outlined in the department manual, including: a. Oxygen Therapy, b. Compressed Gases, c. Aerosol and
Humidity Therapy, d. Pharmacology, e. Infection Control, f. Airway Management, g. EKGs, h. EEGs, i. Psycho/Social
needs of patient.
· As required, participates in the department Performance Improvement program.
Sleep Lab
· Prepares patient for sleep study by proper application of electrodes, calibration of equipment and patient education.
· Ensures that all tests are properly charged.
· Ensures that documentation is complete and legible. To include CPAP levels, oxygen flow, patient positioning.
· Responsible for the completion of all procedures scheduled during the shift without interference to the quality of the
work performed.
· Regularly performs other duties as assigned. Demonstrates competence in all assigned procedures.
· Demonstrates a willingness and ability to assist others as requested. Regularly assists in other areas of the
department such as receptionist, clerical and other assignments as requested. Always uses time to departmental
advantage.
· Rotates as needed on all shifts as requested. Regularly performs duties on an on-call basis.
Equipment & Maintenance
· Cleans and assembles non-disposable equipment as outlined in department policy.
· Cleans sleep lab and equipment as per manufacturer recommendation.
· When necessary, performs a pre-operation check on sleep lab equipment.
· Maintains sleep lab computer and all associated equipment. Routinely inspects cables, power cords and other
associated equipment for damage.
· Always keeps work area in a clean and sanitary conditions; disinfects all exposed surfaces.
Continuing Education
· Reviews available media when time permits.
· Reads professional magazines. Maintains, develops and updates skills to implement ideal care and service.
· Researches topics for in-service lectures as requested.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
Minimum Education
Required: NA
Minimum Work Experience
Required: Must be able to work independently. Good communication, interpersonal and customer service skills. Basic computer
skills.
Required Licenses: Registered polysomnographic technologists (RPSGTs) within 6 months of hire, current BLS required at the time of
hire.
FUNCTIONAL DEMANDS
Working Conditions
Sleep lab and hospital clinical areas. Frequent stressful situations. On-call hours. Must be on-site at St. John's Health
or other facilities to fulfill the responsibilities of this role.
Physical Requirements
Some stretching, bending, reaching, pushing/pulling related to assisting patients and moving equipment. Must be
able to lift 30 pounds. Intermittent standing, sitting and walking, and computer use.

Internal & External Contacts: All hospital departments, patients, physicians, family and or friends of patients, community agencies, vendors and
visitors.
