Founded in 1978, Formosa Plastics Corporation, U.S.A. (Formosa Plastics) is a growing, vertically-integrated supplier of plastic resins and petrochemicals. Formosa Plastics is a privately held company headquartered in Livingston, New Jersey. Our core business, producing plastic resins and petrochemicals, takes place at three wholly-owned chemical manufacturing subsidiaries located in Delaware City, Delaware, Baton Rouge, Louisiana and Point Comfort, Texas.
I. POSITION OBJECTIVE
To support research and development initiatives by assisting engineers with daily project activities, conducting technical, application, and quality control testing, and helping Production and Business teams through product evaluation, quality monitoring, and continuous process improvement.
II. MAJOR AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY
• Performing instrumental and wet-chemistry analyses of polymer products and raw materials
• Calibrate, operate, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory instruments and equipment to ensure accurate and reliable results
• Analyze raw materials, in-process samples, and finished products in accordance with approved methods and specifications
• Perform chemical reactions on bench scale as needed.
• Support continuous improvement initiatives related to testing methods, efficiency, quality, and safety.
• Troubleshoot issues with analyses and repair instruments. Investigate, troubleshoot, and resolve analytical or equipment issues; coordinate repairs or corrective actions as needed.
• Handling paperwork as required. Enter analytical data into required systems and complete associated calculations and reports.
• Assist with inventory control of laboratory supplies, reagents, and standards as needed
• Accurately document test results, calculations, and observations in a timely manner, ensuring data integrity and traceability.
• Review and evaluate data and communicate all findings to engineers and other management. Communicate results, issues, and trends effectively with operations, quality, and management teams.
• Attend project meetings and contribute to the projects discussed.
• Maintaining Lab records, including logbooks.
• Participate in audits, inspections, daily NTG (Nothing Touching the Ground) checks, and operational clean sweep activities.
• Conforming to the quality policy regarding ISO 9000 and the Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements as they pertain to ISO 14001.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe laboratory and work environment following 6S or similar standards
• Ensure compliance with company policies, ISO/IATF standards, environmental, health and safety requirements, and applicable federal and state regulations.
• Attend and actively participate in safety meetings, departmental meetings, and required training programs, maintaining a high standard of safety operation
• Operate a vehicle both in the plant and on public roadways as needed
• Maintain regular and reliable attendance. Work outside normal business hours as required to support production or quality needs
• Perform other duties as assigned to support laboratory and operational objectives.
III. QUALIFICATIONS
A. TECHNICAL JOB CRITERIA
1. Previous Related Experience Required
High school diploma or equivalent with a minimum of eight hours of college-level chemistry; or an associate degree in Chemical Technology (Laboratory); or three years of industrial lab experience; or at least 15 consecutive months of experience in a Chemical, Polyolefins/PVC/Polymer Analysis lab experience. Experience in Plastic converting processes and testing is a plus.
2. Technical Skills Required to Perform This Job
• Analytical and wet-chemistry lab instruments
• Plastics Processing Machines &Tools – Various hand and power tools
• Personal Computer (including programs such as spreadsheets, word processors, and databases);
• Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS);
• Good interpersonal and communication skills.
3. Education
High school graduate or equivalent with a minimum of eight hours of college-level chemistry, or an associate’s degree in Chemical Technology (Laboratory).
4. Other Certification/Training Required
• Will require training in Company Policies and Procedures after hire.
• Current employees must meet all technical and safety training requirements for the current position, as specified in the Master Training Plan.
