Local Government roads make up 87.2% of Western Australia's public road network, highlighting the significant role councils play in keeping communities connected and freight, tourism and local economies moving.
At WALGA, the work you do as a Policy Advisor Transport and Roads will help shape policy, influence decision-makers and support Local Governments across Western Australia to tackle some of the sector's most important transport and roads challenges.
Our Transport and Roads team is responsible for advocacy, policy, research, support and advice on a diverse range of issues affecting Local Governments throughout the State. This role is central to that work, undertaking research and analysis, developing policy positions and submissions, managing projects, engaging with stakeholders and representing the sector at various committees, forums and working groups.
One of the most exciting aspects of this role is the opportunity to learn from, and work alongside a small team of knowledgeable and highly respected subject matter experts while broadening your experience across a range of transport and roads projects and policy areas. Beyond your core responsibilities, you'll have the chance to contribute to emerging issues, collaborate across the broader WALGA team and work directly with Local Governments throughout Western Australia.
What does a typical week look like?
One day, you could be researching emerging transport issues and preparing advice on behalf of Local Government. The next, you might be meeting with State Agencies, industry representatives or Local Government officers to discuss infrastructure priorities, road funding, active transport initiatives or network planning challenges.
You could be developing policy positions and submissions, preparing reports for WALGA's State Council, facilitating stakeholder discussions, coordinating a transport and roads forum, or representing the sector on committees and working groups.
You'll also work closely with Local Governments to provide advice, share information on emerging developments and help build capability across the sector.
This is a role where you'll see the direct impact of your work and be involved in every stage of the policy and advocacy process, far from just being a cog in the wheel.

Due to the regular regional travel associated with this role, the successful candidate must hold a current 'C' Class Driver's Licence.
