Job Description

Primary Purpose:

Patrols district property to protect all students, staff personnel, parents and visitors from physical harm and prevent property loss due to theft or vandalism. Investigates allegations of illegal activity. Supervises field operations of the Police Department. Assists the Chief of Police in enforcing all federal, state, and local laws and ordinances.

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Associates Degree from an accredited college of university preferred (or currently taking college coursework)
  • Clear and valid Texas Driver's License; meet and maintain automobile insurance liability eligibility
  • Bonded as required by Texas Education Code Section 37.081(h)

Special Knowledge/Skills:

  • Working knowledge of the Texas Penal Code, Texas Code of Criminal Procedures, Texas Family Code and Chapter 37 of the Texas Education Code
  • Ability to pass required physical, psychiatric, and drug tests
  • Ability to respond to calls for crimes in progress, perform criminal investigations, gather and preserve evidence, write police reports, and take witness statements
  • Ability to subdue juveniles and adult offenders, including use of firearms, non-lethal weapons, and handcuffs
  • Ability to work well with students, parents, and faculty in a school setting to share information for identifying students' risk and protective factors; coordinate nurturing, intervention and prevention efforts; and designate "first" and "primary" responders to incidents and threats to school safety
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to pass written examination
  • Ability to problem solve, think critically and manage conflict
  • Exhibit a high level of personal integrity and displays high ethical standards
  • Ability to think clearly and respond calmly and effectively in escalating situations
  • Comfortable with public speaking in a classroom setting (Examples: instructing students on technology awareness, domestic violence, and traffic-stop education and bullying)
  • Respect for confidentiality and sensitivity to special needs children who may demonstrate unusual behavior
  • Good judgment to know when physical force is required and when it is inappropriate
  • Type at least 40 words a minute with few errors in order to complete necessary paperwork as part of duties (e.g. affidavits, incident reports, activity reports, performance evaluations)
  • Regular attendance is required

Experience:

  • At least one year full time service with Hutto ISD Police Department required.
  • At least five years of full time law enforcement experience or other relevant commensurate experience as determined by the Chief of Police required.
  • Supervisory/management experience strongly preferred.
  • Experience in training and military/tactical operations preferred
  • Experience in Police Patrol, Juvenile Law, Police Traffic to include traffic control, and management of special events preferred.
  • Experience with police investigations, case management, and criminal justice presentations preferred
  • Demonstrated record of working in a school setting, collaborating across multiple district departments, and interacting positively with students and staff.
