Police Investigative Service Officer II positions process, review and analyze misdemeanor and felony arrest reports and citations; gather and obtain statements by witnesses and prepare identification composites; check criminal records; take reports of misdemeanors when there are no immediate suspects; respond to requests for non-hazardous police services; develop leads through the use of computer research, witnesses statements and police documents related to the case; testify in court proceedings as required; assist in transporting property or personnel; investigate non-injury and minor injury vehicle accidents, reports of vandalism, grand theft, annoying or threatening phone calls, crimes against property; identify, process and collect crime scene evidence including latent prints at designated crime scenes; maintain logs, prepare statistical data and perform data entry and retrieval; direct traffic; issue parking and/or misdemeanor citations; provide information to the public relative to community alerts, crime prevention and referral information to appropriate agencies; and perform other duties as assigned.

NOTES:

  • Employees in job classifications represented by Municipal Employees Association (MEA) are scheduled to receive the following general wage increases:
  • 3.5% effective 7/1/27
  • 2% effective 7/1/28
  • 2% effective 1/1/29
  • Eligible benefitted employees originally hired on or after July 10, 2021, will be automatically enrolled in the San Diego City Employees Retirement System (SDCERS).
  • Police Investigative Service Officer II employees may be required to work night shifts for which they may receive 5% additional pay.

Examples of duties

You must meet the following requirements on the date you apply, unless otherwise indicated.

EXPERIENCE: One year of experience conducting in-depth analysis and review of arrest reports, processing impounded property, and conducting in-depth computer research to obtain information for crime analysis and caseload management.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: In addition to the experience requirement above, you must meet ONE of the following options:

  1. One year of full-time experience as a City of San Diego Police Service Officer (formerly Community Service Officer)
  2. Successful completion of a P.O.S.T. certified basic course for peace officers.
  3. Successful completion of a P.O.S.T. certified reserve peace officer level 1 training course.
  4. One year of full-time experience providing assistance and detailed information to the public regarding company/organization services and resolving customer complaints.
  5. One year of full-time experience interpreting policies, procedures, rules and/or laws.
  6. Successful completion of 9 semester/12 quarter college-level units of coursework in Criminal Justice or Administration of Justice, which MUST include Criminal Law, Evidence, and Criminal Procedures (which must include Search and Seizure)
  7. Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice, Administration of Justice, or a closely related field.
  8. Attended a California P.O.S.T. certified basic course for peace officers OR certified reserve peace officer level 1 training course at the San Diego Regional Public Safety Training Institute within ONE year from the date of application.

NOTES:

  • Additional qualifying experience may NOT be used to substitute for lack of the required education.
  • The ability to type at a corrected speed of 30 words per minute on a computer keyboard is required at the time of hire.
  • City of San Diego employees using Out-of-Class Assignment (OCA) experience to qualify must submit written documentation signed by their appointing authority or payroll specialist, detailing the work performed, dates, and total number of qualifying OCA hours. OCA experience without the required documentation will NOT be considered.

LICENSE: A valid California Class C Driver License is required at the time of hire.

  • Proof of successful completion of P.O.S.T. certified basic course for peace officers or reserve peace officer level 1 training course, if utilized to meet the minimum requirements.

  • Proof of attendance in a California P.O.S.T. certified basic course for peace officers OR certified reserve peace officer level 1 training course at the San Diego Regional Public Safety Training Institute, if utilized to meet the minimum requirements.
  • For City of San Diego employees, proof of Out-of-Class Assignment (OCA), if utilized to meet the minimum requirements.

Qualifications

PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS: Employment offers are conditional pending the results of all screening processes applicable to this position, which may include the following: confirmation of citizenship or legal right to work in the United States; completion of a pre-employment medical review and exam (which may include drug and alcohol testing); reference checks; and fingerprinting. Fingerprints will be submitted to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the California Department of Justice for a conviction record report. All screening processes must be successfully completed before employment begins.
