Job Summary:

Supervises and participates in the receipt, storage and transfer and disposal of police evidence and other property; and performs other related duties as required.

Examples of Duties:

• Supervises personnel assigned to the Evidence Section, providing instructions with assignments and review handling, and securing of evidence and /or property for conformance with policy and procedures;
• Instructs and assigns work to subordinates and assists in evaluating their performance;
• Receives property collected and submitted by Police personnel;
• Ensures proper accountability with chain of custody requirements, store and secure all property to preserve the integrity of the evidence;
• Ensures proper storage of evidence requiring special handling;
• Locates and retrieves evidence;
• Coordinates viewing of evidentiary items requested by attorneys or other governmental or private agencies;
• Releases and disposes of evidence as authorized;
• Follows-up on discrepancies and operational problems to ensure compliance with laws, rules and regulations, policies, and procedures, recommending alternatives and solutions to superior;
• Performs quality assurance check on evidence data;
• Appears in court to produce evidence and testify to the chain of custody and evidentiary procedures;
• Trains subordinates and police recruits on evidentiary policy and procedures;
• Compiles list of items for auction or disposal;
• Coordinates auction and/or destruction of property;
• Prepares necessary documents and notifications;
• Responds to inquiries regarding departmental procedures on receipt, storage, security and release of property and evidence;
• Transports evidence and property to and from substations, headquarters or other designated sites utilizing a police vehicle or pickup truck as required; and
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Training and Experience:

A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from high school; and

• three and one half (3 ½) years of work experience in handling evidence and property.

Qualifying Clerical Experience:

Work experience which involved the performance of a variety of clerical tasks and demonstrated knowledge of office practices and procedures, and the ability to carry out procedures in clerical work systems, and operate various kinds of office equipment including computers, Microsoft Office, and other technologies.

License Requirement:

Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license (Hawaii type 3 or equivalent).

Firearms Requirements:

As applicable to the position, must be qualified to carry and/or possess firearms or ammunition in accordance with State and Federal law, e.g., no misdemeanor or felony domestic violence conviction.
