The purpose of the Police Customer Service Supervisor is to provide leadership and supervision to all Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police employees attending court. Duties include managing the service of all district court subpoenas, civil court subpoenas, and defense attorney generated subpoenas for the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department personnel. This position ensures compliance with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department rules, regulations, procedures, and directives.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Supervise CMPD Court Liaison Unit personnel to include the areas of: attendance, training, and performance.
  • Monitor court attendance and take appropriate disciplinary action when necessary.
  • Ensure that complaints or conflicts involving CMPD employees and court personnel are given appropriate attention and forwarded to the appropriate person if not immediately resolved.
  • Work closely with the District Attorney’s Office and the Clerk of Court’s Office to resolve court-related problems.
  • Prepare a monthly and annual report documenting all court attendance, court absences, and subpoena service information.
  • Document citation problems to the appropriate patrol division’s Administrative Sergeant for follow-up
  • Ensure service of subpoenas and investigate those situations when subpoenas are not served. Notify Divisions of reoccurring problems.
  • Review property disposition sheets for accuracy and research case disposition in the clerk’s office for property disposition sheets with a closed disposition, but no judge or district attorney signature.
  • Attend Criminal Court Committee meetings and Arrest Processing meetings.
  • Review requests for court date changes and assist the District Attorney’s Office with equitable distribution of courtroom workload.
  • Maintain open communication between officers, all CMPD divisions and all agencies of the criminal justice system.
  • Update personnel changes, including name changes and assignment changes, in the court-related computer system databases.
  • Performs other duties as needed.
  • Must be willing to obtain DCI and CJLEADS certifications.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Highschool graduate or equivalent and five years related work experience
  • OR Associate’s Degree with three years related work experience
  • U.S. Citizenship

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Supervisory principles/techniques
  • Basic organization and operation of federal, state and local government as it pertains to Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department
  • Organize, manage time, and track important documents and information
  • Communicate effectively, both written and verbally within CMPD and with external partner agencies and non-law enforcement entities as necessary
  • Handle routine and/or sensitive inquiries from contacts with government and legislative officials and general public
  • Prepare and maintain accurate and concise reports and records
  • Work well with minimal supervision and communicate with chain-of-command as needs or concerns arise
  • Familiarity with modern office technology.

Positions in this class typically require grasping, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions.

Physical Requirements:

  • Essential and marginal functions may require maintaining physical conditions necessary for sitting, standing, climbing, or walking for extended periods of time
  • Light to moderate lifting and carrying; some crouching, stooping, squatting, crawling, reaching, pushing, and pulling when performing tasks
  • Ability to see, hear, and communicate information effectively

Sensory Requirements:

  • Concentrated and attentive use of one or more senses (visual, audio, and other sensory modalities) for proofreading, data entry, and tabulating data.
  • Ability to operate in an environment with frequent interruptions from people and or noises, which in turn could result in some level of stress, fatigue, or strain.
  • Comprehend written information in work-related documents.
  • Ability to hear, understand, and distinguish speech.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

The City’s Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte. The type of information that will be collected as part of a background check includes, but is not limited to: reference checks, social security verification, education verification, criminal conviction record check, and, if applicable, a credit history check, sex offender registry and motor vehicle records check.

Background checks must be in compliance with all federal and state statutes, such as the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). The checks must be consistent with the guidelines set forth by these laws requiring organizations to obtain a candidate’s written authorization before obtaining a criminal background report, motor vehicle records check or credit report; and to properly store and dispose of information derived from such reports.

Final candidates must pass a pre-employment drug-screening test and physical examination. During the selection process, candidates may be asked to take a skills test, and/or participate in other assessments.
