Job Description



The Point of Care Test (POCT) Coordinator is responsible for the oversight, coordination, and continuous improvement of point-of-care testing across the facility. This role ensures regulatory compliance, quality control, training, and competency assessments for non-laboratory staff performing POCT. The POCT Coordinator collaborates with departments to maintain accurate, reliable, and timely testing while ensuring adherence to established clinical laboratory standards and policies.

Essential Functions
  • Oversees and coordinates the implementation and maintenance of point-of-care testing (POCT) in compliance with hospital policies and regulatory requirements.
  • Develops, evaluates, and maintains quality control and quality assurance programs for POCT, including calibration, troubleshooting, and corrective actions.
  • Operates, verifies, and maintains point-of-care analyzers, ensuring proper function and documentation.
  • Trains and assesses the competency of non-laboratory personnel performing POCT, maintaining training records and documentation per regulatory standards.
  • Reviews and monitors POCT results for accuracy and quality, investigating discrepancies and reporting abnormal findings when necessary.
  • Maintains and updates policies, procedures, and documentation to reflect current POCT regulations and accreditation standards.
  • Acts as a liaison with POCT vendors for equipment support, maintenance, and upgrades.
  • Compiles and submits POCT metrics and performance data to laboratory leadership.
  • Supports internal and external audits related to POCT and ensures ongoing readiness for inspections.
  • Collaborates with clinical departments to ensure proper test utilization, workflow efficiency, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Maintains regular and reliable attendance.
  • Complies with all policies and standards.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Chemical, Physical, Biological, or Clinical Laboratory Science, or Medical Technology required
  • 1-3 years of experience performing or coordinating point-of-care testing required
  • 1-2 years of experience with laboratory quality control programs required
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Proficient in POCT device operation, calibration, and maintenance
  • Strong understanding of CLIA, CAP, TJC, and other applicable regulations related to POCT
  • Ability to train and assess competency of non-laboratory clinical staff
  • Strong critical thinking, problem-solving, and time management skills
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills to work across departments
  • Knowledge of laboratory quality assurance practices and regulatory standards
  • Computer literacy and ability to navigate laboratory and hospital information systems
Licenses and Certifications
  • MLS - Medical Lab Scientist (Formally MT Certification) issued by ASCP, AMT, AAB , or equivalent required
  • State license where applicable required
